BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

God, I would never use a antivirus that reduced my speed so severly.

Switch to some else! Plenty of free software that in the very unlikely event you get attacked by a virus (I havent seen one in 4-5 years at home) will still do a good job.

AVG, MSE etc....

The only thing that still attracts me to kaspersky is that I can actually turn it off. I've had avast, avg, malwarebytes and some other free alternatives but I found that when I stopped protection or closed the programs that they still left processes running in the background. Years ago AVG used to interfere with CSS for me even when closed because of it's background process so I am a bit suspicious of these now.

But enough of that haha, there's a thread in software for that in-depth stuff :p

Just about to give it a few trial runs in games

okay guys, got my new network card and tried a new test via cabled connection:

compared with wireless:

So, do you reckon that I just need a new wireless adapter?

I'm still only getting download speeds of around 2mb/s using Jdownloader and IDM :( Anyone able to advise on this?

Thanks

I use AVG and if it wasnt upto the task I wouldnt use it.

First of all it has a (supposedly) game detect mode.

You launch a game it reduces its activity.

Ontop of that a quick untick of a box in the options turns the realtime scanner off whilst I game.

Its that easy.

I saw this yesterday.

Kaspersky - I don't think it "poisons" the ethernet port it just messes up the speedtest result and produces irratic ones. Its well known for it.

as an example when I was on O2 if I turned off Kaspersky I get about 5-6mb which is normal if I use it with Kaspersky on everytime I get stupid results like 56mbps or even 127mbps so it can't be having a detrimental effect on speed.

Depends what you are downloading and where from. You are not guaranteed to get the full whack everytime after all the internet is a big place.

I understand this. I'm downloading from Fileserve and got my full speed on my old connection. I'm just back from PCWorld after I bought a new wireless adapter and the speed is worse :( I give up.

Still no call from BT. Does anyone know the best number to get through to the department that would have phoned me trying to flog me infinity?
