BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

buckeejit, if I was you I would go about it like this:

temporarily move pc next to router.
test wired speed at several sources, speedtest sites and actual downloads.
test wireless speed with pc still next to router, if speed comparable with wired move pc back upstairs and test wireless again.
if wireless now slow something is causing interference, or the wireless adapter is rubbish or the router has insufficiant range.

If you can't get wireless working properly then try and convince your mom to get some ethernet cable installed. You can get external grade stuff and run it around the outside of your house if installing it internally is a no go.

Otherwsie powerline adaptors are another option or if it's a range problem range extenders and/or better router.

Good luck.

Also interested in the specific number to enquire about infinity. My current speeds with bt are terrible 3mb down and 0.3 up.

Last night I just phone 100 from my land line and pressed anything that sounded internet related, eventually got through to someone who put me through to the right place. I think/hope that this is a free call so I'll use that.

The person that I got through to has confirmed that I can't get Infinity yet and that I will have to un-cancel my existing internet connection.

They said that they will try to "do something for you to restore your faith in BT" Not sure what that means, maybe a discount or something when I can actually get it.

They said it's in my Exchange but not in my cabinet yet for at least another month.

Wondering what I can try to blag for the inconvenience now.

install ethernet from downstairs to upstairs and get 32mbps on a speedtest, much happier now.

buckeejit - +1 for homeplugs/powerline adaptors !

thanks for all your advice guys but I've spoke to my mum and she's going to let me run an ethernet cable. I ordered a 30m long flat ethernet cable so it doesn't look as bad. sorted :)... well hopefully.

What not to do

Just a little advice on what not to do when laying down ethernet cable. The HH3 and Openreach modem were plugged into a surge protector 4 way power extension. I drilled a hole through the wall near a TV aerial socket in the vacinity of where the BT kit was and I plugged the drill into the 4 way surge protector.

This was a hole that went from internal wall out to external wall. All went well, placed plastic tube through hole to ease threading of cable etc. Then when tidying up noticed the lights gone out on the 4 way surge protector.

Oh pants.

The drill had blown the surge protector. Luckily the openreach modem is fine. The HH3 looks fine. The Surge protector seemed to have done its trick.

HH3 gets moved upstairs now and plugged into other end of the ethernet cable installed. So I can connect my PC directly to it wired. Job done one thinks.

However ever since the wireless on the HH3 does not work properly. I can connect to the HH3 wirelessly, it says the PC is connected, the HH3 says its connected. However my wife's laptop can't ping the HH3, can't browse to the HH3 so looks like something to do with the wireless connection is damaged.

My Nokia phone won't connect to it properly anymore and my Dad's HTC wouldn't connect either.

So my wife's laptop is wired too at the moment and luckily I don't mind too much as I have just bought a replacement router anyway.

Moral of story don't drill near the HH3 !

Haha, thanks mate. I think I'm just going to run a cable from my room to downstairs where the HH3 is. I'll be tucking and nailing the ethernet cable in and around skirting boards etc.

Just had my Infinity installed:

Happy so far. :)

That's good news, although I wouldn't use flat cable, because it's flat the wires aren't twisted and so it has no protection against interference. Just something to be aware of if you get problems with throughput. IMO do it properly with "round" cable and do it once. You might get lucky though and it'll be fine.

Thanks for the advice John but flat is the only way I could go lol. Just done a speed test with the wired ethernet set:

I'm over the moon :)

Well ditched the Horrible Home Hub 3 and using a Belkin N1 Vision. Works like a breeze. Wireless 100 times better and lets my laptop connect at its fastest N speed.

Nice one mate. I might keep that in mind since my wireless connection with HH3 was horrendous. How far is your PC from your router when connecting via wireless?
