New Company Car c 18.5K

The MK5 Golf came out around the same time as the MK2 Focus.
The MK6 around the same time (later that year) as the MK2 Focus facelift - like the MK6 Golf, the facelifted Focus featured changes to every panel except the roof, new interiors and some changes to the engine line-up.
MK3 Focus appeared this year - I don't really see it as unlikely that VW will have a new Golf in response.

Your argument about Stilos and Bravos is irrelevant. The MK5 and MK6 Golf carry the same name and look ridiculously similar, if not almost identical save the bumpers and lights.

Well I'm 99% sure you are wrong.

To do a MrLOL:

The Golf 5 has proven expensive to build[citation needed] - largely due to its uncommonly long 50-hour build time. Its replacement has been moved forward from the previously stated 2009 in Europe to Autumn 2008, right after its official premiere at the Paris Motor Show in September 2008.

The Volkswagen Golf Mk6 (or VW Typ 5K) is the successor to the Mk5, and was unveiled at the Paris Auto Show in October 2008

It had a whole press launch thing, ala a brand new car.

Have ended up getting the Guilietta 1.4 Multiair Lusso in Etna Black :d Unfortunately looks like I'll have to wait till end of August for it but getting delivery date confirmed tomorrow I think. Going to be a massive improvement on my Swift :)

Hero:) Beautiful car!

This means nothing. So did the Focus facelift:

Ford unveiled a facelifted Mk2 Ford Focus at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007

and your emphasis on the word replacement means nothing? The MK2 facelift replaced the pre-facelift - that's what happens when they both facelift and release new models - they replace old ones!

Nothing you've quoted states anything about it being considered an all new model, because it isn't.

I'm sure someone who knows a lot more about VW's will be along soon but I'm sure this is a new Golf, and there isn't a new one due for years.

It's listed like this:

5 Golf Mk5 (A5/Typ 1K, 2003–2009)
6 Golf Mk6 (A6/Typ 5K, 2009–present)

Implying the MK6 is a whole new, 6th generation of the Golf and is likely to be replaced 6~ years after it was first introduced (2009).

The Golf has always worked like that, the Mk1 and Mk2 were very similar but distinct models, the Mk3 and Mk4 were very similar but distinct models and the Mk5 and Mk6 are very similar but distinct models.

The Mk7 I can't see arriving for several years yet and I would imagine will be a complete revamp as the Mk3 and Mk5 were.

vis a vis the Golf the mk6 was based on the same PQ35 platform as the Mk5, the mk7 will be based on the new MQB platform.

Although you consider facelifts new cars so this would be a 'new' car, in line with facelifting every 3-4 years.

No, that is you. I consider this supposed "new" MK6 to be more of a facelift.

The MK7 will be a completely new car - 7-8 years after the MK5 was first introduced, which fits in with your 6-8 year timeline just perfectly :P

Funnily enough, so does the MK6 "facelift" - arriving ~4-5 years after the MK5's introduction.

Expect a facelift after 3/4 years and a replacement after 6-8 years as per other Golf models.

I've never seen a 53 plate MK5, so assumed it was 2004 (maybe it was here - all I can find is a European release date). So it's late 2003/early 2004.

MK6 was early 2009 - I make that 5 years.

I prefer the MK6 personally.

However I prefer the MK5 estate and the Jetta to the Golf hatch myself ...the other two have a different nose to the hatch, which looks much smarter imo ...added to the fact that being a saloon and an estate respectively they just have nicer profiles (I don't like compact hatches much).

The MkVI is a heavy facelift in my view, despite the fact that everything you can touch inside the car is different. If the platform is the same as the previous model, it's a facelift imo. I wouldn't go by what VW claim peerzy, they obviously have an incentive to call it a brand new model :p.

Still a very solid car though, if not thrilling. We're delighted with ours so far.
