The MK5 Golf came out around the same time as the MK2 Focus.
The MK6 around the same time (later that year) as the MK2 Focus facelift - like the MK6 Golf, the facelifted Focus featured changes to every panel except the roof, new interiors and some changes to the engine line-up.
MK3 Focus appeared this year - I don't really see it as unlikely that VW will have a new Golf in response.
Your argument about Stilos and Bravos is irrelevant. The MK5 and MK6 Golf carry the same name and look ridiculously similar, if not almost identical save the bumpers and lights.
