It's to stop bots making accounts and put off people using them to spam.

What's exactly wrong with it, don't you own a mobile phone?

I just signed up for GMail "yesterday" and had none of this phone or txt validation, are you sure it is required? Didn't come across anything like that!

good grief, how can you not have a mobile phone?

my new one cost ~£15, and thats with £10 credit on it automatically.

i'd post you my old one, but the battery life really isnt great if you plan on doing something crazy like phoning someone
