is nail varnish makeup

bit of a difference with the facial hair - that is daft. If you do not shave you have a beard - hardly an affectation.

From Dictionary.com
"af·fec·ta·tion
   [af-ek-tey-shuhn]

–noun
1.
an effort to appear to have a quality not really or fully possessed; the pretense of actual possession: an affectation of interest in art; affectation of great wealth."

YAY, semantics!

I would say most guys I know that fail to shave fall into the catagory above...

Though some of those men who fail to shave are quite genuinely lazy or don't care about such things.

So YAY, everybody is right again!

I understand the meaning of the word.

So a girl at work tells you its not make up and you decide to ask a forum that's mainly made up of men as to whether she is correct or not :p

Personally make up to me means anything you'd apply to your face. If I was to say look at that girls make up to someone they'd look at her face not her nails.

Nail varnish is a cosmetic

i may of asked a forum full of mainly men i have had quite varied constructive replies so it has been a successful experiment!!

Then you understand how a beard might possibly be an affectation, surely?

frankly, you're boring me - the addition of 'might' to this post was missing from your first mention of beards being an affectation

edit: just noticed two different posters, so yes a beard might be an affectation but not always - mine is just a beard

I was just trying to explain why you were both right. Sorry about the boredom.

My point was that specifically growing a beard with the intent of 'looking good' or 'I want to look like that', is an affectation. Just like applying makeup or wearing nail polish is. Same thing.

presumably your wardrobe contains seven sets of identical, purely practical, plain clothing one for each day of the week, rather than risk affectation

af·fec·ta·tion

noun /ˌafekˈtāSHən/
affectations, plural

Behavior, speech, or writing that is artificial and designed to impress

I'm using it to include makeup, and groomed facial hair. When you grow a beard, not to be confused with "letting" a beard grow, do you do it arbitrarily or because you think it will impress, or make you look better, or good? The same way women apply makeup to their faces, and sometimes other parts of their body in order to impress, make them look better or good. And same with nail varnish/polish.

I don't know what definition you're using, as mine is perfectly valid.

Unless I've struck a nerve and you feel threatened that your beard might in fact be in the same realm as eyeliner?

And as to your ridiculous question, no. I have many different sets and styles of clothing, thanks.

No chord has been struck and I certainly don't feel threatened but thanks for the concern. I have an unkempt beard which occasionally gets removed. My original point was that beards are our natural state.

I obviously asked the question regarding clothes because applying your logic, that choosing to look a certain way 'to make you look better' is an affectation, clearly then applies to any item of clothing which is not simply designed to protect you from the elements or protect your modesty.

Bye, bye.
