I would say most guys I know that fail to shave fall into the catagory above...

So a girl at work tells you its not make up and you decide to ask a forum that's mainly made up of men as to whether she is correct or not

Personally make up to me means anything you'd apply to your face. If I was to say look at that girls make up to someone they'd look at her face not her nails.

frankly, you're boring me - the addition of 'might' to this post was missing from your first mention of beards being an affectation

edit: just noticed two different posters, so yes a beard might be an affectation but not always - mine is just a beard

My point was that specifically growing a beard with the intent of 'looking good' or 'I want to look like that', is an affectation. Just like applying makeup or wearing nail polish is. Same thing.

presumably your wardrobe contains seven sets of identical, purely practical, plain clothing one for each day of the week, rather than risk affectation

I don't know what definition you're using, as mine is perfectly valid.

No chord has been struck and I certainly don't feel threatened but thanks for the concern. I have an unkempt beard which occasionally gets removed. My original point was that beards are our natural state.

I obviously asked the question regarding clothes because applying your logic, that choosing to look a certain way 'to make you look better' is an affectation, clearly then applies to any item of clothing which is not simply designed to protect you from the elements or protect your modesty.
