STEAM DEAL - Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines - £3.74

bought it off Steam, applied unofficial patch 7.6b, set it to run in xp compatibility mode but crashes whenever I enter/exit buildings with an access violation :(

Curious but have you also set it so that vampire.exe runs as admin, disable visual themes and disable desktop composition?

Also, so far I actually really enjoying it.

ok, i know this is dumb, but i can install it on my laptop now, and then on my pc when at home, but i can only play it on one computer at a time (as steam only allows you to be logged in on one machine)?
Think your going find it very hard to be able to play it on 2 systems at the same time ;)

Yup, done all that. Followed loads of instructions on the Steam forum to get it running. Going to re-install (again) and see what happens.

Finally got it to work. The instructions on the Steam forums don't work for me.

What I did:

Download from Steam
Disabled "Steam community in-game"
Selected "Do not automatically update this game"
Installed the 7.6b patch
Find the exe in the steam folder and make it XP SP2 compatability mode
ticked "Disable Visual Themes"
ticked "Disable desktop composition"
ticked "Run this program as administrator"
Click on the shortcut in the Steam interface (not in the steam apps folder)

Only problem is when I exit the game the Steam shortcut has reverted to "automatically keep this game up to date" so I have to change it everytime I exit thegame...

Mine works too now.

Put -refresh 75 -sw -width 1920 -height 1080 in the startup instructions in steam (obviously changing it to your resolution/refresh)

ive done all this, and ran the res patch but i cant get the game to work in fullscreen. Just opens in a window. Anyone got any ideas?

Run regedit, browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Troika\Vampire\Settings, double click on the DWORD labelled "ScreenWindowed" and change the value from 1 to 0

I dont need this on Steam but this thread has made me want to re-install from CD and go around biting some necks :D

Might make a proper smooth talking, socially skilled vampire... see how many times I get my ass handed to me.

Oh, and seduce Jeanette too ;)

Yep, by the douns of things, if you have the old CD version (like me ) just stick with that. Also got it on Steam myself, but have yet to try it.

Edit: What a weird typo :o

I've got the old cd version too, had it since release, by the douns of things I think it's time for a replay!

Wonder if boxed copies on ebay will fall in price after this, they still fetch a decent premium on there for a game this age.

hows best to play the game

Level up stealth or guns?

Difficult to say how 'best' to play, but I'll say this.

You have to fight certain battles, no matter how you play the game. A high stealth vampire wont be that much use in battles, but they will have had the advantage of using stealth to steal stuff for cash for better guns, hack computers for info etc...

Basically, you will end up increasing your physical/guns stats throughout the game, but when and how is pretty much up to you. You'll see as you gain XP through the game.

Also, try to match your combat choice to your class, if you can. For a brujah/gangrel, it makes good sense to focus on unarmed/melee skills.

A toreador/ventrue might want a bit more in the firearms area, to deal damage at a distance before getting up close and personal.

Just bought this now. I have read some reviews over the past few years and it's supposed to be awesome, but it never really looked appealing to me.

I have played some great RPGs over the year (not too many), like ME and Deus Ex and loved Half Life 2. So hopefully this can keep me going for another long while :D.

Would anyone be so kind as to write the instructions down from when you're downloading from Steam?

I've seen conflicting opinions about patches and whatnot. I'll be playing it on x64 Win 7 on a 1080p resolution, just tell me the basics I need to get it working please.

Go to \Steam\steamapps\common\vampire the masquerade - bloodlines, right click on the vampires.exe and set it to run in Windows XP service pack 3 compatibility mode.

Install this unofficial patch: http://www.gamefront.com/files/service/thankyou?id=20563891

Next, go to http://www.fileplanet.com/156598/15...e-Masquerade:-Bloodlines---Resolution-Patcher and download the resolution patcher.

Follow these instructions:

0. VTMB cannot run at the time of patching.
1. Copy VTMBResPatcher.exe into the folder with "engine.dll".
2. start VTMBResPatcher.exe
3. change the values like you want them to be like or use one of the default sets of resolutions.
4. click "Patch It".

Start the game.

Press Esc 4 times to skip the intro movies, they don't seem to play for me I get a black screen.

Go to settings, choose the 1080p resolution.

Restart the game.

Enjoy!
