Been trying to get the temps down on this cpu.

i5 2500k / Asrock p67 Extreme6

I have an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler. Which on my old i5 670 was spot on it was oc'ed at 4.5ghz with load temps of prime and intel burntest of around 65c.

On the new i5 with the standard asrock 4.6ghz settings im getting nearly 90c at times with intel burn test. Needless to say i stopped the test at that point.

Max volts were 1.4 at that point.

I have left speedstep and such likes alone until i can get the temps down more under load. Then switch them off and try for more.

I orginally had akasa 455 thermal compound, now im on Arctic silver 5 and used the cleaners etc. It maybe dropped my temps by a few degrees c.

Is the only option to go watercooled?

what temps are others getting on air?

Am i getting a good thermal joint between the chip and sink?

Other info in my sig.....

Got the same chip at the same speed on my setup.

Idling around 29-30 and maxing at around 66, that's with max volts at 1.35v though.

Getting a better quality cooler should help a lot.

Ahh i see you have lapped. im sure thats it! Mine seems to bind on 3 corners. My old i5 was true as could be on same cooler.

Any good guides on cpu lapping?

Hmm heat sink lapping, I will try for sure.

I'm sure its the surface of my cpu that's irregular.
When I was enginnering training you would lap the two surfaces together you were trying to marry up in some cases.

Would this be a bad move, to lap a cpu surface?

Hmm I will post a pic of my cpu face, to show the high spots.

I lapped my Q6600 and Thermalright Ultra Extreme and knocked about 15 degrees off it. Lapping a CPU is a hell of a lot easier than doing the cooler, which was a pain in the backside, but a lot more expensive if it goes wrong!

Man you have the same chip and cooler as me!
(what thermal compound are you on?)

What oc and voltages have your got?

And what temps are you on with prime 95 etc? Would love to know to narrow down the potential issues may have.

Also just bought a low cost antec water cooler with ok reviews. Will see how that turns out. Antec Kúhler H2O 620 CPU Watercooler

Hmm getting prime faults at present on last core.

If i remove the oc they go. Too Low vcore voltage?

Maybe the when the watercooler is in i will try higher volts.

You have a budget cooler, anything over 4.4ghz on a sandybridge CPU is going to produce a lot of heat. Your vcore for 4.6 is massive. That will be part of the problem in my opinion

Put the Antec Kúhler H2O 620 on today!

Max temp with intel burn 69c

Prime temps in mid to low 60's!

I've gone up to 4.8ghz also. Seems stable so far @1.48v. EEEK!

Nice water cooler, ok for a first try

Well my i5 after an hour or two of gaming hits 70.

My gtx 570 hits 86

Got a mid range air cooler and the case (very tempted bya kuhler 920...), a cm silencio has limited intake air. Going to fit a second intake fan. ANyone recommend a good quiet fan for the fornt intake, somehting about 1000rpm,are the sharkoons quiet?

Warning, noob question.

I have an i5 2500k @ 4.5 Ghz and want to see what temp I am reaching (I'm folding heavily on it). What is the best software to do that with as I cant find anything at all already installed to check that (unlike my GPU)?

Sorry if this is a thread hijack but it seemed smarter to ask here rather than start a new thread for it.

Edit: And as soon as I submit that I finally find the answer in another thread. Please ignore.
