I've had steelseries before and actually own a Razer Destructor pad which I used for a year before re-purchasing a BoogieBug again and don't see any loss in precision at all. I even owned a Razer Mamba mouse in between that period and saw no difference between "gaming" surfaces.
I think these terms, gaming, precision, control and whatnot are thrown around far too much when it comes to surfaces over such a small difference that it's not worth arguing about.
I have not sold the Destructor yet because it will get some use as the BoogieBug ages over the years and I decide what to get next.
So to reply to your post, no, I didn't just buy a BoogieBug because it was cheap and does the job. I own a mat that cost 3 times as much and prefer the BoogieBug because it does the same job but gives more comfort and a bigger surface area.
Drink spillages are not a problem. I imagine for people with hands that knock stuff over a lot the Puretrak will be a godsend though! erratic-UberMicro is a strange condition
Edit*
The reason why the other brands get mentioned so much is because outside of OcUK, the BoogieBug is only sold at maybe 1 or 2 other online stores last time I looked, and only in the UK too.
