How does FF7 hold up today?

I'm another "FF7 is one of the best games ever made" type guy.

I've nearly finished FF9 now (bought off the PSN store) and it doesn't even compare (IMO). I just want to finish it so I can move onto FF8 (which I also didn't finish the first time round).

It's not a bad game by any stretch, but the story and characters just aren't as good as those in FF7.

X is enjoyable, certainly the most enjoyable of X, XII and XIII. The combat system is strategic, the blitzball frustrating but fun, the story acceptable and the characters likeable.

The storyline for X was amazing, the whole Sin and Tidus thing was a massive revelation.
I felt drawn into the characters like never before. Even though Tidus had that stupid voice the ending was really sad.

Blitzball is good when you aren't getting slaughtered by every team.

While I love FF7, the one character who I really liked was Zack. He was the best character and had the saddest story of the whole game :(
Crisis Core really added a whole other dimension to the game.

Except Linkin Park are gay

No, you're gay! :p

im tempted to give this (or 8) yet another playthrough as ive completed it too many times already but i dont think i have got past the first disk for some time, i had it on my psp and it worked great on it and ive just picked up an Xperia Play and im very tempted but ive never played 4, 5, or completed 6 so i might give them a runthrough first but im torn

i also love 8 but i never liked the laguna bits for some reason... never seem to add anything and the characters you played as were never my main 3 so it wasnt very enjoyable either... my main memory of 8 was i finally finished the game then i got called down for tea so i had to do it all again to see the end FMV

If that happened to me my dinner would have got cold. Why oh why would you leave :o?

I was exactly the right age for FFVII, 13.

Maybe this is clouding my judgement, but i still consider it to be one of the best games ever. I have it on my PSP(along with VIII which is also great) and i am playing it atm, but only very occasionally.
I ahve probably been playing it on/off for about a year. It still holds up very well imo

These days it would be no problem because you could just spoil yourself by looking for it on the Internet, though it obviously wouldn't be the same, but back then (Oh my god, dial-up, NOOOOO!), I would have been extremely ****ed.

The Ultimecia battle was quite a pain in the arse and long, including the ending FMV itself for it's time.

for the emerald weapon in FFVII i spent a full day with a save just outside the water with cait saith on my team and with his random limit break full, would go do the battle, do his limit, if it didnt get instant death i reset my console and started again... took me all day (possibly 2) but i got it in the end, tried other ways with knights of the round and pheonix but none of them ever worked for me

that game has some good memories, also getting my cousin who just wanted to play on my games no matter what he did to run around and grind for me

I used to do the Cait Sith Limit Break "cheat" as well.

Resetting the PSOne and it's long load times, oh what a pain!

Good thing was at the time, I also had the PC version and at least that was much quicker. And then there was also the use of trainer programs. :D

Mine was always RedXIII/Cloud/Yuffie. Am I the only person that on recent playthroughs has called Red by his actual name, Nanaki?

I've always wondered if the developers thought ahead and implemented extra text dialogue for it, but what happens when you actually do name RedXIII Nanaki? Does he say anything? Or when you reach Cosmo Canyon and the dude at the entrance mentions it?

I don't think so, I haven't read the in-game text for ages. I'm guessing it's just the same to be honest :).

Damn, cause I'm quite OCD when it comes to talking to every NPC and reading as much text dialogue as possible, even for little changes, but for this, I never bothered to do it because I always straight away name him after my dog.

I never knew of the Cait Sith cheat, I'm surprised they let that one get through after they made the majority of boss battles in FF6 a simple matter of casting Vanish/Doom.
