hi all just wandering what the difference is between these 2 ssd's, in 240gig form, ( and dont say about £85 ), the read and write speeds are nearly the same, so why is one so much cheaper than the other.

The vertex 3 uses better quality nand memory chips then the agility 3, so thats where the price difference basically comes from.

Edit:
Agility:
- Capacity: 240GB
- Controller: SandForce SF-2281
- Maximum Read: 525MB/sec
- Maximum Write: 500MB/sec
- Max I/O Per Second (IOPS): 45,000 IOPS (4KB File)
Vertex
- Capacity: 240GB
- Controller: SandForce SF-2281
- Maximum Read: 550MB/sec
- Maximum Write: 520MB/sec
- Max I/O Per Second (IOPS): 60000 IOPS (4KB File)

Should have added this earlier but forgot, they are very close in performance, but the vertex is that little bit faster read/writes, but the key difference is the IOPS, so with the better quality nand chips/slightly faster speeds/IOPS, thats why the price premium is there on the vertex, it is a better drive.

That being said, the agility is a very fast drive itself, so if u don't need the best of the best, the agility is for you, its faster then most drives out there, if i was upgrading me vertex 2E id opt for the agility, its got excellent performance for its price point.

Some people are still having problems with OCZ ssd'd with latest firmware esp. on sandybridge mobo's. [don't use Marvel controller] AMD is less troubled.

How do I find out what raid controller my board has? NVraid maybe?

If it has a half decent conroller onboard then I might pick up another Velociraptor and RAID 0 them. Should be nice and fast for the price

When you say - "not missing that much" what would be missing, speed?

You have a RAID controller built into the Intel chipset.

Your transfer rate etc.. may not be as brilliant but seek times remain the same, in side by side usage with a more modern board. However visually you will not notice this in day to day usage.

I'm tempted to get one of these agility's, however I keep reading that they suffer from stuttering, bsod's and other problems. Are these problems common with these drives or is it just the odd one?

I went and ordered one a couple of months ago now and while i was waiting for it to be delivered i read about all the problems people have had with them. So i got it into my head that i would be either sending it back or having no end of problems with it.

Well, not had one single problem with it, no lock ups, no bsods, not touched the firmware on it, left it be on 2.06 it came with and its been 100% fine. Going from a standard 80gig hard drive to the 60gb agility 3, the speed difference is outstanding, soon as its its booted its ready to use, where before id have to wait around 30 secs for it to all load up before i could start clicking away.

At the moment with one Velociraptor drive once booted its ready to use about maybe 2 seconds

My HDTune 'scores' are as follows...

The burst rates seem about the same as these new drives. I have seen burst rates of 1915mb with 2 velociraptors in Raid 0. Wouldnt this be better or is it all about the transfer and access times...

OCZ say about 1% of drives. Depends whether you have a Sandybridge mobo P67/Z68 as they seem to be most affected.

+1^^ I read through that myself and it does seem that there are some hidden gains when looking at the vertex3 vs the agility3 or sync vs async in general. I however just went with a 120gb Force3 myself as over all it still seemed the best buy given the price premium of around £45 over the forceGT.

We need a new way to grade these drives as peek performance of large data blocks really is nothing to go by...

Just to note it is ALL SF2281 controllers based SSds which are suffering from these errors and not just OCZ. OCZ however has slightly different firmware, or perhaps maybe just the most modern due to an extra level of support they have with SF which may be making problems on there drives worse ..or less.
