Hey guys,

After some advice really. Been looking into a new car. I originally fancied a Clio 182 or a Leon cupra r.

I've now been looking at the following two cars anD I'm totally unsure which to go for. Both are priced similarly.

Impreza wrx sti type r/p1 and evo 5/6 gsr/tommi mak edition.

Unsure which to go for and wondered which people think is the better car? They are both quick so that doesn't matter. I just really like them both and unsure which to go for. I've narrowed it down to 4 imprezas I like and 4 evos. All within 50 miles of me so will go looking this weekend.

Cheers

I've driven Imprezas but not Evos - I'm told they are two very different ways of skinning the same cat, so Gibbo is right - you need to drive both, and preferably back to back.

Out of those, Evo 6 Tommi Makinen Edition for sure. So long as you can accept that it will cost much more to run, what with the bigger brakes, more regular servicing, worse fuel economy etc.

Chalk or Cheese ?

Go drive both and see which you like most. Generally most will agree that the subaru's seem to be the better all rounder, but the Evos better when you are giving it 10/10ths.

As above, drive both and then buy an Evo :D Just kidding.

Impreza is the sensible choice, cheaper to run and to buy.

Evo's are easier/cheaper to tune. Personally think Evo's are better looking. But then I would wouldn't I? ;)

Heart would say EVO but head would say Impreza.
So go in to get an Impreza and enjoy the drive home in an EVO :)

chalk and cheese? they're both 4wd 2.0 turbos!:p

No competition with the EVO tbh mate if your keeping it as a totally standard car.

If your going to modify though, id be swaying toward the Subaru as tracked up P1's sound insane!

I have a bugeye wrx, 3" cobra full system, Sounds immense at any rpm. It's the only car I have owned that has presence on a street before it even turns the corner onto it. Add into that the ihi turbo vf series I have sat here ready to fit and it will give any fast motor out there a run for it's money.
EVOs are nice and would take a 5/6 but they are imports and may carry hidden issues like lack of underseal causing rust and diff problems (as a mate found out to his cost)
Wrx's and STIs can have the odd issue too but being a UK car (obviously plenty of jdm's out there too) parts are very easy to get new as well as used, lower insurance and are quite a mechanical, involving drive.
Do your homework on costs, servicing will be roughly the same especially if you are able to change plugs, filters and oil yourself. As I said the EVOs will cost more to insure (compared to UK imprezas), strangely EVOs have very small fuel tanks for their size and fuel consumption (a shade worse tan the equiv impreza) so will feel like you are always filling them. Whatever you decide I hope you will enjoy owning a fit and healthy example.

Modified is completely different isnt it?

A mate of mine has the blob eye, running hybrid, full exhaust etc etc. Its like driving a firing range, especially with launch control :D

They both can be easily modified but haven't owned an evo so couldn't comment on them in that respect. From the numbers I worked out when I had that choice, the impreza ticked more boxes though looking back should have went straight for an STI that said, I'll have bags more horsies shortly so im not unhappy with my choice. ;)

Yeh, I don't want anything modified, I want either both standard if possible. I don't intend on modifying them and they won't be used as a daily commuter. It will be a Friday drive to work car and a weekend fun car. I'll have it regularly maintained and serviced and will try and do my bit if I can. I've heard imprezas are more practical but evos just insane!

I'm sure for many impreza owners it's all about the noise. If your a fan of the scooby burble then an Evo will never do it for you. I think what's most important here is driving both cars, and finding one thats been well looked after with no expense spared.

My Evo 8 was probably the 'best' car I've driven in terms of handling but my STI PPP was 'better' all around. If you haven't had an Evo, get one now while you can ;-)

A lot of Evos, especially the 8's had disc warping issues, it would be worth checking, if you can, if and when the front disks were replaced and if this has happened in the past.

Andi.

Noise? yup, does it for me!
Ignore my missus's lack of manual gear useage (she drives the 4.6 V8 semi auto X5).
I wouldnt change the noise of this bugger for the world.
