Anyone miss,,,,,CRT?

It's extremely obviously those who are claiming CRTs are always better than LCDs, and how LCDs can't product a proper black, have only experienced a really crap low end LCD.

The black theme background for these forums is just as black my black keyboard is, colours are great and vastly superior to the CRTs of old that most people would have used.

I don't miss CRTs at all, I always hated them with the horrible headaches they used to give me (at any refresh rate).

I have to say though I used to not miss the heat a CRT generated in the room when on for several hours but my 24" Hazro is all aluminium so as you can imagine heat is exhausted in 360 degrees instead of just through the vents so you can warm your torso with it :p

The price you pay for quality materials eh!

There's a difference between missing certain aspects of a CRT, and 'claiming CRTs are always better than LCDs'. I use a TFT because it has some other advantages but that doesn't change the fact that I believe the CRT was superior in some regards.

In an ideal world, where I could have an airconditioned office with a massive desk and never need to move anything around, I'd love to have a proper high-end CRT (22"+, >130kHz). Probably use it alongside a TFT to be fair and have the best of both worlds.

Tell that to my monitors! :p they can kick out some serious heat sometimes.

How do you set the theme to black?

I love my Samsung monitors but I feel like I'm working in a bank, with the 24" CRT I had it was proper gaming, with water cooling and LCDs giving out no heat my computer never shuts down, it doesn't keep me on the edge of my seat and isn't as fun.

Hmmm, my LCD gives out a LOT of heat, to top of it is always burning hot. It is slitted with lots of vents to let the hot air out too.

Its almost burning hot to the touch.

No, I don't miss them at all. I have one being used in a bartop Mame machine, but it adds a fair bit of weight to an already heavy machine. It will be replaced with an LCD or arcade monitor.

There maybe something wrong with yours, do they ever get turned off?

It hardly ever gets turned off. Im sure its just meant to be that way because its been like that since I got it, and the ventilation holes must be there for a reason.

This review says:

The ventilation slots of the monitor are mainly located on the upper side of the curve on the back. In addition, two further ventilation openings are located on the sides. The ventilation slots are rather large in order to disperse the heat. Unfortunately, part of the backlight shines through in places, which might cause insects to make their way inside.

Its image quality is OMG awesome though, this thread has the best pics I can find for it, my own pictures are all crap.

I also just started playing Trine, words cant describe how gorgeous it looks on this screen :)

Somehow I miss my old 21" NEC, I was shocked to see 1600*1200 for the first time and it was an expensive monitor so it looked soo much better than 1024*768 on a crappy monitor.

But other than that I don't really miss them.

I have only experienced the good LCDs & they don't do better blacks than CRT.

My NEC 30" 2560x1600 £1800 my 2x NEC 20" 1600x1200 £500 each.
My Samung 30" 2560x1600 £1200 had the best blacks & it still could not match the CRT.

My £2500 "50 Pioneer Kuro Plasma has better blacks than all the LCDs.

The thing is over time you just get accustom to the blacks of the LCD.

the new oled lcd's look sexy for blacks as they have no back light there.

hopefully we'll all be on120hz OLED screens soon :p

I still think LCD panels lack a lot of the image quality that CRT have. I'm not an expert, but the colour reproduction seems more faithful and the image is a lot more fluid. Plus, every resolution looks good and nice high refresh rates.
CRT have better viewing angles also, I guess it;s a case of 2 steps forward, 1 step back...

30" LCDs usually arent the best quality.

Colours and blacks are very perfect on my current monitor, much more fluid, vibrant and better contrast than I remember my LCD having.

Do I miss CRTs ? Hell yes.

The reason being, I used to play a lot of competitive games online/LAN and CRTs for many years (still do to some degree) offer a major advantage over TFT screens, not just for refresh rate, but response times. Obviously now the gap with these particular things has narrowed since, but for a very long time CRT was the only option. The only reason I gave up my CRT was because it died, and I was giving up competitive gaming anyway. My HP w2207 is the closest thing in terms of 'look' that I could get at the time similar to a CRT - the glossy screen enhanced the colours and blacks to a similarish level over matte coated screens but still far from perfect. My HP w2207 has been great for all the years it has replaced my CRT but it definitely does not match response time or refresh rate, and for that alone makes me want to replace it.

I notice many of you hear say how you have a monitor that rivals or surpasses your previous CRT screen - care to mention the screen you have? I ask because it gives those of us wanting something similar or better than CRT, some screens to consider.
