The petition system really ought to have had an option where you could vote against it, so even if it hit 100,000 positive signatures, if it had 200,000 negatives then it wouldn't make it to commons.

As it is, there are now two petitions and whichever one hits 100,000 is going to spark a debate, even if it's the 'no to death penalty' one. We now have a situation where the pro death penalty petition could fizzle out after 50,000 signatures but the debate still ends up in commons because the opposing one reaches 100,000.

It's stupid and ill thought out

Agreed, good idea start a petition asking for this

We'd have to leave the EU if it came back.

I don't see the problem in it. Criminals these days aren't punished hard enough to be honest, especially those with serious charges. Harsher consequences = less brave criminals. This country is too soft as it is already.

However, is it worth abandoning the EU for it? Probably not

Far too many people on this little island.

Nothing wrong with knocking a few off.

Exactly the sort of people you want knocked off too, whats the point in a disgusting, screwed up mental case murderer having children?

They will just end up costing the taxpayer even more money.

Dead people dont cost anything, so lets bring back Hanging and more likely the lethal injection.

Capital punishment has zero place in society. Serves no purpose and is not needed.

Quite. If we bring back capital punishment we may as well adopt sharia law... or something equally as barbaric

We don't need harsher laws, we need the existing ones enforced more stringently.

Politicians are supposed to be smart, educated and enlightened people, that's why we allow them to make important decisions on our behalf. Pandering to the rabble who shout the loudest is not part of their job description.

No they won't. Historically crime rates have soared when we've had more crimes punishable by death.

Really?
Historically? In a modern crime scene based society, when have we introduced and then removed the death penalty?
If introduced it should be as a punishment, not a deterrant, you execute the folks who have cmmited multiple murders, and multiple rapes.
Then the reoffending rate drops to zero for those in the ground.
Those who have committed rape and are out on licence, and pedos and the like will likely benefit from a deterrant, but that isn't the point.

Our current bleeding heart human rights heavy society preaches rentegration and reeducation of prisoners, and it isn't working. Lets murder loads of them for a decade or two and see if the crime rate truely soars, if it does then i shall eat humble pie.

Also dont compare t the US, they spend about half a life waiting to be killed, rubbish idea, death penalty means that, multiple murder, rape, child abuse, taken out the back and hung by the neck.
If convicted incorrected due to someone faking events or confessions etc, then they get the same treatment. Couple of decades of it and I think you'll find immigration might drop a fair but too :)

I would quite happily support capital punishment for an offence that would have otherwise put a crim in prison for a third time.
