Question: What happens when you set up camp in the middle of polar bear territory?

My wife just informed me that we know the family of the boy who died. In light of this I won't be commenting further.

You can't know them all that well if you didn't know his name? Why would it stop you commenting?

It's a shame but the trip staff should have been more careful and all of this could have been avoided.

Silly humans getting pwned by nature.

We arent the top of the food tree you know. Put a bunch of squishy unarmed people in a room with a ****ed of polar bear, and guess which one would win?

OFC we all know that the fault of this is purely due to video games, all of those people involved must have played video games where they are allowed to have polar bears as pets.

/BAN all games that allow you to have aggressive killer animals as pets. They are obviously the cause of people thinking that they can go and pet cute wild bears / tigers / lions without getting mauled / eaten

I had not read the article other than a quick scan. I did not connect the name to that of the family immediately, my wife told me independently which made the connection.

Either way, they are friends of my wife and I and I feel that any further personal feelings I have on this should remain private for now.

Of course I agree with killing the bear if it is attacking you.

But when you set camp in a very open arena, pretty much right in the middle of it, I think you are asking for it to happen.

Seriously. It's sad what happened but we see stuff like this every year in Norway. Tourists who come and scoff at the rules and guidelines about camping and wildlife saying it's all fine. Then stuff like this happens

Fair enough squire, RIP to the lad.

I'll repeat what it said on the National News that the last time anybody was mauled in that area was in 1995 because the bears normally keep themseves to themselves.
It's a risk but looking at those figures it's probably the same as a plane crashing (or less).

Quoted for Truth -

Polar bears belong in the Arctic, spoilt little Etonians and other privileged brats don't. When a polar bear attacks it does so because it is it's natural instincts, they have no reason to be putting up tents on an ice shelf other than they have paid a vast amount of money to go on a trip to boast about to their friends.

My friends were having this argument a while back and while I believe we're not top of the food chain naturally, the fact that we have developed enough to manufacture things such as guns means we should be allowed to uuse them in these types of comparisons.

Was no one on stag, trip flares, wire, electric fences? Isn't that the usual in areas like that

apprently they spotted the bear a few miles away from camp the day before.

I bet the toffs thought 'Ooh how beautiful and cuddly'...

and then you've got people spouting out 'how heroic they are being' in hospital. Eh, what?

That would be like pulling the bear's teeth and claws before hand. Give the humans a weeks notice and the freedom to do what we do best, there will be no unarmed humans. Someone would end up with a new rug.

We are top of the food chain in the same way a pride of lions would be if it was not for Humans. Everything we do is natural in the sense that its how we have evolved.

Wow no CSI sunglasses meme yet.

I thought it was standard practice to have a 12 bore in your tent in that area? I remember a few years ago a British explorer got in trouble for shooting one in the same area.

Surely the whole point of an expedition like this is that there is an element of danger ?

Dangerous animals exist in many parts of the world and life goes on as has been noted this sort of attack is extremely rare. The organisers may indeed have been negligent as far as precautions are concerned but I for one will not pre judge without knowing the facts. A rogue animal choosing to charge a human camp in the dark for instance is I suspect hard to stop quickly.

I only wish that when I was 17 I had the chance to camp out in Norway with dangerous polar bears or go climbing in Afghanistan : (

Trip wires, flares and fences are usually the norm. If a polar bear is spotted close to the camp a day before (which it was) they should've been on high alert anyway...

Not fair that the bear had to die, only humans that perished, i mean bears are way more exclusive than humans

Wow check out all the rich people envy in this thread.

Also as for this being rich people on a jolly:

"BSES Expeditions is one of the longest-running and most distinctive youth development charities of its kind. Based at the Royal Geographical Society, BSES Expeditions was founded in 1932, by an original member of Captain Scott's final Antarctic Expedition of 1910-13, Surgeon Commander George Murray Levick Royal Navy to provide young people with an intense and lasting experience of self-discovery in some of the world’s last true wilderness environments around today. For over 75 years, BSES Expeditions has provided the opportunity for young people, aged 16–23 years old, from different schools, universities and many other walks of life to take part in valuable adventure and environmental research projects in challenging areas of the world from the Arctic to the Amazon Rainforest. Led by experts drawn from a host of professions such as universities, teaching and the Services, all the expeditions aim to help in the development of young people through the challenge of living and working in remote and testing areas of the world."

A 17 year old gets killed and all people can do is mock - GD is really becoming a sorry state of affairs.
