^^ Well the problem is for me... once each different publisher gets the idea they need their own specific distribution client, required to be running to play their game, etc. etc. I'm gonna end up with half a dozen or more different clients that I need installed - half of them no doubt poorly programmed, bloaty, cause compatibility issues, non-intuiative to use, etc. and then I either have to open and close them individually depending on the game I want to play... or leave them all running at once - probably starting with windows which will massively increase windows loading time... and while 1-2 clients on their own aren't a massive resource overhead once you start to have to have one from each publisher it adds up... oh and then if I decide to reinstall windows or move to a new PC I've got all the hassle of making sure I've installed all the clients, randomly located saved settings ported over for each client, etc. working out any DRM issues specific to each client and so on. Personally I've got enough hassle to deal with in my life without wasting time on this and I'm sure a good number of people are in the same boat.
Unfortunatly for other publishers steam was not only there first, they've put some effort into making it less resouce heavy and more convenient/useful to the consumer over the years to.
EDIT: and this isn't even touching on the social aspects, etc.
