Riots in Tottenham, London! (NO RACIST COMMENTS)

There is no evidence that sure start and EMA do anything of the sort, especially looking at the ages of many of the looters ;) Indeed one of the big problems with our welfare system (and a difference from many other countries where income inequality is lessened) is that our system has a massive benefit trap and a system of entitlement without responsibility.

There's plenty of evidence that both work - especially EMA. Keep burying your head in the sand that more income inequality isn't as important as equality of opportunity though, despite all the evidence.

However, the decision to become violent scum remains solely with the individual, there are no excuses and no justifications that remove or diminish this. Society cannot be responsible for the choices of individuals.

Agreed.

Did you guys just hear the interview with Trever Reeves who owns the business that in burning down in Croydon. Bloody heart breaking his family has been running that since 1867

I can see Asian shop and restaurant owners in some areas not standing for this. They WILL take things into their own hands when the thugs arrive in their areas.

#LondonRiots 400 young Asian lads chased away 150 rioters from green street, east L! No police, community looking after area.well done boys!

Glad to hear it but I hope this doesn't become a common occurrence. I want the police/army to protect me, I don't want to have to guard my street.

Down my end at Whitechapel & Brick Lane, the local bangaldeshi youths and the muslim communities are holding their ground. Brick Lane restuarant chefs are out with their butcher knifes. Thugs around the East London Mosque got a scare from the community. Bengalis guarding their turf. Good stuff!
Big society in action, Davie will be proud.

Not when you're at a school that is so far down the league tables the only teaching staff they can attract can only be described as the dregs.

Not when the facilities that you have to learn in are terrible.

Not when you've got to deal with friends being sucked into a life of gang culture, or drugs, or alcohol abuse

Not when you don't have the support of one good parent, much less two

Not when it is effectively programmed into you that you will fail at life and yet again continue the vicious circle that you were born into.

Etc.

So no, not really.

Joshy, dude my dad is a teacher.. hes taught in many 'inner city' schools in the early years. The kids, especially the Afro-Caribbean ones show NO interest in getting an education. And when they were called on it or got into trouble etc.. the first thing they said 'its because we're black'.

We do have some awesome hardware in the military for dealing with riot situations. We have been using them in conflicts for years. They have seen action in northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan Tear gas and batton rounds are a very effective non lethal way of dispersing crowds when used correctly.

Maybe when used correctly, there was enough people over here killed with plastic bullets due to the RUC firing them at head height, of course the height they fired them at all depended on what side of the community they were dealing with at the time.

So theirs no libraries, no on line teaching supplements, no parents to help???
The reason why children don't do well is because of their attitude and their parents.
If they haven't got either then guess what the kids don't get anywhere, maybe we should be looking at the kids.

Sorry but those are just excuses.

I've lived all of those. It did not make me condone riots and be a criminal.

I bet a lot on here went to poor schools, I for one did. A very bad inner city comprehensive in the third most deprived borough in the country. I managed to get to a top 10 uni, and did ok,
Life's what u make of it. We are lucky in this country we get a decent education.

So hit the Log Out button and go kick in some shops or something. It's your destiny, as you have so clearly pointed out.

Meanwhile on BBC South, swans at a Dorset wildfowl reserve are being played Tchaikovsky to help them go to sleep.

These are all excuses, none of these make you choose to riot, loot, be a criminal. They may make life harder, but you still have to choose to break the law.
