Gtx 570 vs HD 6950/6970

Yes it most likely will strugle at those resolutions, but BC2 30 fps average @ 5760x1080 with 4xAA and 16 AF is no mean feat, considering 580 sli achieves 35 fps average at the same resolution.

Which still leaves me at the same conclusion when as I quoted 'but technically' answering the op that the 6970 indeed wins every single game from there on up.

Theoretically, if a 6990 had double the fps @ 1080p over the 590 but couldn't achieve a higher resolution, it wouldn't be classed as the more powerful card would it?

i'm quite disappointed with the comments made as it made me regret buying the MSI HD 6950 TF III.. ;P now the gtx 570 has more grunt compared to the two cards. the main selling point for me is it being priced almost the same as the 6950 and cheaper than the 6970. now im going to the dark side (nvidia) once the next gen cards are out.

The 6950 was never competing with the 570 in the first place, it was always the 560 it was lined up against.

As pointed out, the 570 and 6970 perform roughly the same, both win some lose some. The cheapest 570 on oc is £250, the cheapest 6950 2GB £198(£191 on offer just now) £52 (or £59) is some mark off the same price.

This gen, Amds 6 series prices have increased due to being very popular cards.

Personally I would be waiting to see performance/price between the next gen cards before making any decisions.

As usual it depends on the game and settings I use. Having reviewed many graphics cards at 1920x1200, I found the GTX570 to be better than the HD6970 at the games that I play. Surely that classes the former as the more powerful card. Regardless of what either can do at higher resolutions, in my case the GTX570 is the better card so what would be the point of the HD6970? Not to mention that the GTX570 runs cooler, is quieter and overclocks much better, so much so that an overclocked MSI 6970 Lightning fell slightly short of a reference GTX570 in overall performance.

Deciding between the two cards however shouldn't be decided on overall performance. In my opinion, one has to decide between the two cards based on the games they play. It's surprising the number of games that seem to heavily favour one card or another.

Don't worry too much, after all you still have a high end card which might overclock to around 6970 speeds anyway. There won't be that much in it.

i wish i had known this before. o.O i was really not keen wiht nvidia cards at first but after seeing good reviews about their cards and after being disappointed with amd cards i felt like looking at the other side of the fence. im going to wait for the next gen for maybe some price drops on the old cards.

6970 is not really faster than GTX570...it is faster than it in games like Crysis and Metro2033 because it was clearly heavily optimised for them. If you look at more recent games like Crysis 2 and Witcher 2, the GTX570 has a VERY clear lead over the 6970 at 1920 res:

Crysis 2 (with HQ Textures and dx11):

Witcher 2:

i could say same thing visus versa

This, but technically, a single 570 can't go any higher than 2560x1600, where as a single 6970 wins every single game from there on up.

Is it worth noting that all Radeon HD 6970 graphics cards can support a max resolution of 2560x1600 on up to three monitors?

True, but then I believe there's a GTX570 with 2.5GB? frame buffer for those who want it to drive big screens with lots of detail.

Thing about video memory is that it needs to be judged on individual merit.

Bit of a sweeping statement tbh

You have to draw the line somewhere, otherwise it would always be a long winded affair. There may well be a game, albeit infrequent, that does put the 6950 ahead, but not that many. Overall the 570 is definitely the better performer.

You can't, as the HQ texture and dx11 feature of Crysis 2 was added AFTER the launch of the cards, whereas the 69xx cards are launched AFTER the Crysis and Metro2033. Also, dx9 mode performance reflect the performance of with the cards quite accurately with not much biased toward AMD nor Nvidia (6870>5850>6850=GTX460), so GTX570 having high frame rate than 6970 in Crysis 2 pretty much points to it handling the HQ texture and dx11 feature better with lesser performance impact, or have more grunt.

Maximum resolution is still 2560 x 3, whereas the 6970 can push up to 2560 x 6.

Just flogged my 6950 and got a 570. Its quicker and a few older games that wouldn't run on the ATI card (OpenGL issues) now work again :)

That doesn't make a point when u compare 1 game my last statement still stands

Pointless sidegrade really, but it's your money.

Well not really. As I said in my post, its a faster card and games that didn't work with the ATI card, i can now play again.

Either one of those equals an upgrade in my book. Flogged my 6950 for £120 after only having it for a couple of months (coulda got more but couldn't be bothered with eBay etc) so lost a few quid in swapping but was worth it.

So to answer the OP, yes, if buying now go for the GTX 570, i've owned and gamed with both within the space of a couple of weeks and whilst the 6950 is a good card, the 570 is better if you can afford the extra few quid. I got one of these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-143-GW&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1010 and its quite slinky and very quiet indeed. Never fancied or considered the 6970.
