having three times as many officers on the street, may help overwhelm numbers, but if they still have their hands tied, then it will still be ineffective.

i bet unofficialy cameroon is telling the police to take the gloves off and if anything goes wrong officers wont be prosecuted. he cant say things like that publicly though

After listening to the PM and the measures they will take, I can now sleep safely tonight.

What a waste of time CaMORON is, its about time a Brit PM grew some gonads and let the police do their job and if that means using water cannons, baton rounds and tear gas then so be it.

Sounds like reasonable action to me. You don't want more police on the streets?

Good statement from DC.

Big issue will be if Violence sparks up at the other areas of the UK - i'm surprised we had nothing in Middlesbrough since it is meant to be the worst town in Europe.

Also people that think that the insurance companies will pay for the damage done by rioters (especially burnt out buildings) think again. Lots of policies don't cover damage by rioters.

To be fair to DC, what did you want him to do ? Suit up and go postal on the streets later. They have nearly tripled the police presence on the streets. I expect more to come from him through out today / tommorow though.

Foolish putting 16,000 police in 1 place and getting police officers from around the country. That means its just more easier for people to do damage outside of London..
I think they have the information to suggest there isn't the will or scale of will outside of London for serious riots that cannot be handled by the forces that will be there. I suspect no area will be left significantly under-capacity.

So now there will be 16000 Policemen standing and letting idiots throw bricks at them?
Where's the deterrent? Different policy is needed, not just more numbers.

Water cannons, rubber bullets, heavy handed Police tactics, not just standing around letting these shops get robbed.

I ask you AGAIN, how will water cannon and rubber bullets stop wide spread, non centralised, rioting? Water cannon is used to disperse crowds from one area and stop them advancing. The rioters aren't advancing on a centralised position and therefore none of this will help. There isn't a line of rioters facing off against the police.

I really wish people here would stop saying we need "more robust policing" but not actually say what that is or how it will help. Put forward your view on what the police should do and how it'll help bring it to an end and lets have a good discussion.
Just spouting words is boring.

Their hands haven't been tied by government. It's been pretty clear by events from last night and comments this morning that the police couldn't take any violent action while outnumbered by rioters. It would result in rapid repercussions and escalations elsewhere.

He should have been dressed head to toe in riot gear while giving his statement. His closing line should have been "I'm going to go smash some backsides about".
