Im looking into getting a pet or two, wanting something smallish, affectionate and friendly, fluffy and cute :D. but also cheap to look after as i dont have a lot of spare income :(

Id prefer to get whatever animal(s) from a rescue home or someone who has a few spare rather than petsathome etc.

Was thinking if i got something like a guinnee pig or herbivour they can eat some of the same veg we have for meals, plus offcuts etc, and there normal dry food is cheaper than cat/dog stuff :)

Have a garden but would need to probably make a play area or run, as theres a road at the front of the house (not busy though) and a field opposite.

Im considering from rabbit down to mouse size wise, what do you chaps advise?:)

guess i would have to dig into my savings.

Its kinda odd that they are so cheap to buy (free to £40) but other stuff can be really expensive

Rats can be cheap, the ones i've had in the past were really nice and wanted to be out of the cage all the time, if your lucky you can get some that will stay perched on your shoulder for hours and not move, if not they'll want to get down. They do tend to chew allot :( i've lost a lot of bedding and clothing in the past due to holes in them. Can be retentively cheap but i don't condone it (i like to spoil them with lots and lots of bedding and flooring) but in a cheap sense you can just put newspapers for flooring and then shredded paper for bedding.
I've only had to visit the vets once out with all of my rats and that was due to a tumor, so my guess is, its rare that you'll need to go.

The cheapest pet would be one that never gets ill (and doesn't eat like a horse). It's the bleedin' vets that can make having a pet pricey.

Awwww ^^^^^

I'd say hamster or house rabbit. You can get pet insurance for rabbits, but they're pretty cheap to look after without it. A hamster would cost you about £5 - 10 a month, they do tend to die after a year or two mind, although I have had hamsters who lived for 3 years. My rabbit lived for nearly 9 years. :)

You could get a chav. Some of them are furry however very few are cute. The bonus is that the state will pay to clothe and feed them and will take care of any vet bills. They can be trained to **** in a toilet and as soon as they hit puberty they try to breed - you could sell a litter of chavs as pets or as sausage meat.

Rats make the best cheap pets IME. I've tried most, and always had the best luck with rats.

-Hamsters are often psychotic
-Rabbits go senile/evil
-Guinea pigs don't do anything (and my main reason for thinking guinea pigs are a no-no is that they are so petrified of everything that you can touch their eyeballs before they blink)
-Gerbils are noisy and eat through anything
-Mice are rats for poor people...so why not get a rat?

I had a pet rat once, and it was probably the one of the most affectionate animals I've had. I kept him separate from our other rats as he kept getting mauled by the others. He became so friendly that he would lick people, and used to love to sleep under/by my pillow and would only defecate in his cage. Also he wasn't averse to being pocketed and taken to my mate's place in the next town on the train. They need LOTS of attention to get them to this stage, and males are better than females even if they smell more.

The sad thing about rats is that they only live for ~2.5 years. However, unlike cats/dogs etc, if you get a crap one, you don't have to wait 15-20 years for it to snuff it so you can buy another one. :p

Don't necessarily rescue a rat - just get the smallest, youngest you can find and handle it all the time, then you are pretty much guaranteed an awesome pet. Oh, and did I mention you can get them to do tricks too?

hahah

My vote would be rabbit or guinnee pig.

My find keeps a goat in his garden:confused:

I loved my pet rats, they are really cheap to keep but can be very time consuming, They are very social so need a decent amount of attention, they were incredibly affectionate too.

The only downside is that they need cleaning out a lot (I cleaned up their mess every day and changed everything else twice a week)
