Then you have to go where the work is:

I asked a lady who works for me in her 60's what happend years ago when benefits and that did not exist and she told me a story about a guy at the end of the road who lost his job and had a family and a house, she said the only job he could get was 5 miles away, this was the days before cars where mainstream, and she said he simply used a bike and travelled 10 miles each day.

That simply does not happen now, people think they have the right to walk into a job paying them a fortune and travelling for about 2 minutes to get to it.

I know most people hate it here, and admittedly, most people don't use it for its intended reasons, but EMA has helped me hugely this year, seeing as we're not too well off, its basically my bus + lunch money, of which it covers perfectly, with almost nothing left. I have a doubt I would've been able to go to the 6th form I'm at now (grammar), as it's a 50 minute commute in the morning via bus/train/etc and my dad's trade is quietening down hugely - he works monster shifts though, sometimes coming back at 3-4 in the morning only popping into the house for coffee etc. It's a huge help though, as my old school's 6th form was downright awful; not an A in my subjects (Chemistry etc) for years.

Thats nice. And your comment on the 98.75% rejection rate?

What it means is that there are jobs for the top tier, most skilled 1.25% of the unemployed, for everybody else, there are no jobs, which was his point.

But don't worry, the governments forced worked programme is set to fix that problem. Benefits claimers forced to do 30 hours a week community service to retain their benefits, which is the equivalent of 1 third minimum wage. A brilliant, dirty, underhanded way to get around minimum wage.

Why should people in receipt on benefits not have to earn them!

Ah the good old days, when kids were disciplined and never got into trouble. My father could tell you tells of how he had to go to school without any shoes because the couldnt afford any!

Alas, we don't live in the stone age, and your rose tinted spectaculars are more suitable for a house party with Elton John than in civilised debate.

40,000 jobs, how many are unemployed are there ?

Where I come from, there are 80 applicants per position for even the scummiest of jobs. That doesn't mean there are 80 jobs and 80 candidates that will filter through, that means for any job you have a 98.75% chance of rejection.

Really? 80 for even the scummiest job? I find that hard to believe.

At my school, also a grammar, nearly 50% of people were on EMA. I would say the majority of that money was spent on alcohol, since, as we were in London, we received free travel with an oyster.

You are the exception rather than the norm which is why it is being reformed.

my grandfather moved from south wales to the midlands, left his family behind for a year whilst he got a home setup, job secured and with travelling back once a month at weekends for the 10h coach journey.

So I totally agree with you.

This. I respect the fact that there aren't *that* many jobs available for many in this country. However, people don't seem to be willing to travel that far for jobs and do certainly think that they should have one on their doorstep.

I have a crap job, that I'm over qualified for and I have to commute an hour each way to get there. However, it's a job at the end of the day and is a bit of money.

I totally understand that they're reforming it and why.

Looking at the other receivers of EMA in my school, yes, I would say it needs changing because, like you said, they blow it on booze and stuff. Heck, one kid saves it for concert tickets. :/

I just thought I'd maybe offset the negativity slightly with a story about using it for its intended purposes. I fully agree it needs changing though, maybe make it so you get subsidized travel/books/lunch from it, but don't actually get to use the money how you want (i.e you can't use it for a magazine or something you see in a store.)

"Meanwhile, Keith Vaz, chairman of the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, has told the BBC its members have voted unanimously to hold an inquiry into the causes of the riots." - bbc website.

Is it really that hard to put 2 and 2 together and come to the conclusion that any area with significant black populations saw rioting. Trying to blame it on poorer areas, or poorer people is rubbish. The North East of England is the poorest area of the country and saw approximately zero riots. Why? Because it has a tiny black contingent.

Why are we so politically correct in this country that we cannot accept the obvious any more? ridiculous.

Why should people be given a job and be paid a third minimum wage? Riddle me that one shirlock. If there is a job to be doing, why are they not employing people into a proper wage?

OH let's see now... because they don't have to pay council tax, possibly most or all of their rent, medical/dental bills etc...
THAT is why.
