Orange Monte Carlo

That scorpion 800mhz in the u8800 is mega. If only CyanogenMod could get hold of one...

Dunno whether to go for a OMC, Defy (£150 off ebay) or a u8800 (ugly, no gingerbread?)

Because I don't I want to keep paying £25\month for a contract when I make the same amount of phone calls as a deaf mute. Plus, my desire is getting a little old in the tooth, had it since release.

I'm even half tempted to just get a tab (iPad\Xoom\whatevertakesmyfancy) and get a PAYG dumb phone so people can reach me, just so I won't have to do the whole "oo, HTC Orgasm has come out, but the Samsung Galaxy S 3 is on the horizon, or the LG Optimus Smell-o-vision... Which do I get?!" :p

So, the MC, with it's bigger screen, Android OS, unlockability, should tick all the boxes for me. As all I want is gmail, net and play SD video.

But! I'm waiting until Mr Jobbie gives his announcements regarding the new iP, and if there is going to be a budget iP and what storage\screen it has.

What?

If you just want a phone that will be used for making calls, emails etc. why on earth would you get an iphone 5 that is going to cost £500+ outright and god knows what it will be on contract probably something like £40 a month and £200+ upfront for the mobile and plus the chances of apple bringing a budget iphone out are highly unlikely, as they don't tend to do cheap stuff, or if they do the hardware will be really crap and cost about £300 pounds still, even the xxxxxxxxx of the xxxx budget android mobiles will still be better than it no doubt.

EDIT:

I would still go for the OMC out of all those mobiles mentioned.

Still feel £150 is too much though. I want to go into town and get one tomorrow but argh... you can get a SGS1 or Defy for the same price off ebay..

what do to:(

It's priced well imho (well, I would say that). The only thing id note from my testing of it is the first time setup is a sell and I report back that using a trick on customers to sign up to e-mail is not nice (skip the email signup - do NOT start it through the setup client and instead use add-account in android settings).

It's been a nice little handset to have for a few weeks, now for something different :)

I'm not trying to be mean when I saythis but you're not the target customer :) While the SF sold a lot in part due to the fact that it was pretty underpriced for the performance it gave at the time, it sold a lot better because it was cheap and hit the right market spot they were aiming for (sub ton with entry smartphone capability). Now it's round 2 and the goal is slightly different - many phones do the "SF" feature spec so this is inflated partially with a larger screen and better design so it's more about return custom who want another cheap payg upgrade before Christmas & tween first contract @20pcm

actually I think I am - I was a massive fan of the San Francisco and the CM7 Nightly builds, I just feel £150+£10 top up is a bit high. The pay monthly prices suck ass too.

The only reason Orange didn't price this at 100 quid is they still want to sell the San Fran.

I wasn't planning on getting the iPhone 5, I was planning on getting the rumoured budget iPhone. But as said, it's a big if. :)

Look at the url of the website. I would wait until a more unbiased review is released TBH.

It looks like the Huawei U8800 is my recommendation for a phone for between £150 to £200.

Exactly. £50 to £60 more for a tarted up Orange San Francisco is not worth it TBH. It is a somewhat cynical move from Orange IMHO.

Now it's round 2 and the goal is slightly different - many phones do the "SF" feature spec so this is inflated partially with a larger screen and better design so it's more about return custom who want another cheap payg upgrade before Christmas & tween first contract @20pcm

Cheap PAYG upgrade?? If you can afford £160 on a PAYG phone then another £15 to £40 will not be much of a stretch, and you can get better phones for £20 a month.

Paying £20 a month for this phone is a ripoff and it seems Orange is more interested in taking advantage of its customers.

The main reason the Orange San Francisco sold well was because it had an 800X480 screen for under £100. At the time it was released you needed to spend over twice the amount to get such a screen. It does have more RAM than many similar phones but both the CPU and GPU are the same as many budget phones in the same price range. With the standard Orange install it is not that fast and most users would probably have stuck with it too.

the only thing stopping me now is the build quality.. im unsure if i can deal with it.. my sf is in jelly case and it has some chips near the headphone jack and at the side of the screen - got the white version.

I'd agree with this.

There's a questionable lack of pictures in that review and the ones that are there clearly show it running Launcher Pro with Beautiful Widgets of which there is no mention of in the text.

There's also no mention of what it can't do and why. e.g Browser flash support, 720p video recording, NFC etc.

You might be able to get it through Ready Deal 60 if you ask on the phone which is where you agree to buy 6 x £10 credit over a 6 month period and they give you £30 off the handset in return. You don't have to buy the usual £10 credit to start with. I say this only as an option for those considering payg and I'm not sure the offer is still open although my internal pages would seem to suggest it has been extended (original ready deal ran out 1/8).
