Remind me what's going on at the equivalent of municipal level in the UK? Oh that's right swingeing budget cuts that ensure that the sort of programmes which would make a difference - SureStart for example don't happen. Here's a good article explaining the problem: http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/the-staggers/2011/08/miliband-inequality-cameron

SO the fact that most reports suggest Surestart isn't doing much of anything and only the National Evaluation ofSurestart suggesting it might be worth continuing, ie, the people whose jobs would be scraped if Surestart was stopped couldn't say an awful lot positive about it. Its been going since '98, have poor peoples educations gotten better, or worse, so is Sure start working, no one but Labour seem to think so, still doesn't change the fact we can't afford it, why, because of Labour.

Why is it scrapped due to cuts, again you seem to love to portray as Tory's making cuts for the sake of making cuts. They are making cuts because Labour spent us into a recession, our economy is in tatters, the EU is on the brink of collapse, as is the US economy and Labour complain through the teeth about every cut, purely because they can as most of their campaigning for re-election included making heavy cuts, just a bit slower, and if we'd done that, we'd be in pretty deep doo doo.

Tory are making cuts because Labour have ruined the country, nothing more, nothing less. Get a grip of your rhetoric, you don't want anything cut, every time Torys want a cut, you complain, what should they cut, and what does Milliband think they should cut, to reduce the 160billion deficit Labour got us into?

has this gem been posted? even if it has, it deserves another one

With much of the debate on the riots centring on the political classes being out of touch with real life, Hazel Blears did them no favours yesterday.

The former Labour cabinet minister was giving an interview to Sky News when she asked: 'Why are these kids not at school?'

Blears had clearly forgotten that it is August and that schools were closed for the summer holidays.

To look better than the Germans we'd need for the riots not to have occurred.

True...but still :p

Lol, Labour.

Lowering income inequality is not the same as forcing equality.

It isn't, but people like yourself and Mr Jack always advocate approaches that make it so. There is no problem that cannot be solved by the application of force by the state...

It is too late to make it happen through legislation, only when we finally have the financial collapse we are inevitably heading towards will things change.

Its so unfortunate too, Britain trying to clean up, only to have the US and Europe lead the planet into financial destruction.

Maybe we will be number one after all this :P (CONSPIRACY:rolleyes:)

Just seen this on BBC:

One student was given a six-month sentence for stealing a bottle of water

Owned :)
I can see the shower scenes now...
"So what are you in for?"
"Nicked a bottle of water to celebrate passing my poetry exam... You?"
"GBH. Can you pass me the soap?"
"Oh ****."

For whats its worth my tuppence worth. To qualify my personal background is being brought up as a family of 6, 2 adopted siblings, mother was stay at home, father was a lecturer, attended only normal schools. I am now a father of four kids and my wife is a stay at home mum.

To my mind this situation has arisen through a number of factors:

1) lack of appropriate education
2) lack of social morals / acceptable framework
3) lack of responsibilty and understanding of consequence
4) lack of shame

In relation to the lack of appropriate education, I use the term appropriate deliberately, this has been due in the main by poor Labour government decisions. When I was at school I believe I was the last generation to get what I would call a good balanced education - this was both academic subjects (maths, english, french, physics, chemistry etc) and vocational subjects (home economics, craft and design, art etc). This balance of subjects provided for all groups of children, those who were naturally academic and those who were not so inclined. For those who lacked a natural ability they could still achieve through these vocational subjects and gain a sense of achievement. Labours insistence that everyone will be academic and 50% of kids would go to university resulted in those who were not natually academic feeling that they were worthless.

Again when I was younger I had multiple sources to help me develop a moral / ethical framework. I had strong loving parents, I had an extended family who had grown up in hard times and we attended church. Although I appreciate many people on here have no interest in organised religion what it helped to provide was a framework of acceptable standards. I am all for people having the freedom to move away from religion, however I feel far too many people in society moved away from religion but never replaced that source of moral framework with anything else.

Lack of responsibity or, possibly more accurately, "I deserve everything" culture. From both government and the media we have been bombarded with a focus on children should be entighteled to get anything they want and that society has no right to discipline them. From stories of people being prosecuted for smacking their children to teachers being banned for trying to control their classrooms. This constant reinforcement gave children a sense of power and freedom, without providing them with the tools to understand the responsibility that goes with this. I grew up not fearing my parents, policemen and teachers, but I grew up with a fear of being on the wrong side of them. This seems to be sadly missing as so many people now believe this group of people cannot stop them doing what they want. All of this has been combined with a "its not your fault", "you didnt fail you just deferred the success" which has resulted in no consequences for people.

Finally all of this seems to have resulted in a lack of shame within society. People used to behave as they didnt want people thinking bad of them. Now they dont care what people think of them or how they behave.

I could also go on at length about the standard of parenting and the consequences of the breakdown of the family unit but I have already typed way too much.

Personally I don't think it's 'lack of....'

When you see the amount of violence in a town centre on a Saturday night - when someones being attacked I don't think 'it must be a lack of responsibility' or 'poor education' I think it's another scumbag whose doing it because the punishment is not severe enough.

If you did make the punishment, like the Texas sheriff, a proper punishment whereby the criminals get forced to do manual labour that no-one else does and generally make them live in poor conditions then, when people come to break the law they'll think twice.

Public humiliation would be my suggestion modern day stocks behind a screen to protect them but make them sit in stocks on saturday for a weeks.

They are all bothered about how they look and coolest trainers etc this would learn em, more serious crimes get them working 6am-6pm digging/filling holes
