Intel X25-M SSD worth upgrading?

hi there,

I've got 2 intel 80GB x25-m that i've been using for just over a year now. They still work as they should and have had no problems. However i've been looking into ssd's again lately and it appears the speeds have increased quite significantly since this drive.

Now i've been considering selling off the drives and upgrading to something more recent like crucial M4, but i'd like to know, is their REALLY that much difference in real world usage, will I notice it? and is it worth me upgrading right now.

The thing is i'm ok with how the drives perform but the problem is they are both full to the brim now, and it's getting really frustrating having to keep moving, installing, uninstalling, my games, apps, etc. For example steam and 3 separate games takes up a whole 80gb drive. :(

so do you think I should bother upgrading to something bigger? or would i be better off just buying an extra HDD and moving some stuff there to to lighten the load on SSD's.

please help :D

lighten the load on the ssd with a bigger hdd....if those drives are raided together then you will notice nothing by buying a crucial m4 and if its 2 single drives in real world its not worth the extra money unless your getting decent money for one or both of your old ssd...its your call but big storage drive is were id be going....i install all my games on to a 2tb storage drive on my desktop and put a shortcut on the ssd to them.....makes no real difference in games

I went from a Vertex 2e to Agility 3 to a new X25-M recently. Noticed no difference between any of them for normal use.

i did consider the raid option until I read someone from intel say it's a bad idea on their drives as they have no trim in raid and don't even have garbage collection also it can degrade performance. I've heard people say you can secure erase them maybe every month or so and restore a backed up image, but i really can't be arsed with all that.

will probably keep these then if it doesn't make much difference. i guess it's still worth looking around though to find how much x25's sell for.

what HDD would you recommend if i was to go that route? I really don't know if it's worth me getting a 1TB drive, I have 640GB hdd space and have never managed to fill that up. Was thinking something 640 or less. Unless 1TB drives are faster??

that's good to hear. funny how people say they don't notice much real world difference but will still buy the latest most expensive. ssd manufactures must be laughing

well ive got 2 of the intel drives you have in raid, and to be honest i have not had and performance loss with hte lack of trim, but i like yourself am running out of space and need an upgrade, have been looking myself at the newer drives.

Well I am considering getting a RevoDrive3 for my games and storage drive and ppl say why not use it as your boot drive, and I say " I use a Vertax 2e 90gb ssd for my boot drive and I doubt I would notice much diff, as apps load up instantly, so you cant really improve if stuff loads instantly can you and windows boots in 10-15secs"

So Im happy leaving my vertax 2e ssd as my boot drive, plus theres about 50gb free on their too, so that should do a few more OS upgrades before it needs replacing.

i had 2 x x25m in raid for a year and they never degraded once and there was garbage collection which is all you really need.....they were very quick together....the price difference between a 640gb and 1tb drive is next to nothing.... i would get the 1tb drive then if you do need some more space its there.....http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-336-WD
personally id go for this but you can get a drive for £45
the western digital is sata3 and has 64mb cache though plus it has a 5 year warrenty..

well intels 'DuckieHo'...http://communities.intel.com/message/108300#108300

"Intel SSDs do not have idle time garbage collection (ITGC) or background garbage collection (BGC)"

further post down "If you want SSDs in RAID and maintain long-term write performance, you need a SSD that performs garbage collection"

raid doesn't sound to good to me, especially if i want to sell them on.

What do you think about the samsung F3 1TB? i know it's sata 2 and 32mb cache, but people say sata 3 is just a gimmick for hdd's and no faster. Also i hear that WD black drives are quite loud compared to sammys
