about 8 months ago i got the iphone4,was a upgrade from my iphone 3g.I was told when i asked about the iphone it was gonna cost me £190 for the phone handset, and then £35 a month, but the advisor said,if i take the £50 a month contract and with this i get my handset for free, and after 9 months i can drop my contract to the cheapest contract for free.

The problem is i was talking to someone the other day and they said o2 have stopped letting people downgrade, you apparently can downgrade once to £45 a month but after that you automaticly except there new tarrif where you can downgrade once more to £40 a month but thats it.I have read some posts on o2 forums and there seems to be allot of unhappy people who where advised to take the £50 a month contract and was told they could downgrade.

anyone else had this problem with o2

You can adjust certain aspects of your contract with O2, like lowering or removing the data bolt on. I wouldn't expect to get it much cheaper though, if anything. They are under no obligation to lower it.

Orange do allow this, though.

when i signed up the advisor said "we are one of the only phone companys that will let you reduce your contract to any package after 9 months" he then said " What you can do is take the £50 a month contract and after 9 months, ring us up and we can drop it to £35 and then you do not have to pay for your handset outright"

They must have done this to loads of customers because if you google it or look on o2 forums there is loads of people that this has happened to

its abit unfair if you advised to take out a contract then they move the goalposts once your signed up and basicly nothing you can do about it

I got an iPhone 3GS with O2 in July 2009 on a 24 mo. £45 /mo. contract. I paid £0 for the phone (instead of £99 with the £35 /mo. contract) and downgraded to £35 /mo. after 9 months, saving £9 on the contract + handset cost.

yea i was told i could do the same with my iphone 4 last sept but apparently they have stopped it.i was advised to take out the £50 a month contract by o2,and was told after 9 months i could downgrade to £35,but since then o2 have moved the goal posts so you cannot downgrade anymore,i bet allot of people did the same as me and o2 now have loads of people stuck on the £50 a month contract, and if you downgrade you can only do it once and by doing this you accept there new tarrif

Was this in an O2 shop or a 3rd party? Being advised that this is possible at the time (although this was a really stupid stupid suggestion on their part as they can not guarantee future terms and conditions) will likely mean you can write to them stating you were told something and wish for a formal response / resolution.

Maybe ask for a written copy of the original contract you signed up for?

If you haven't been informed of any changes there haven't been any in my eyes.

See I was told they changed there tarrif so they can get away with it

Basically when iPhone 4 came out they knew people would be wanting to sign up to get the iphone4 and also knew people will be upgrading to get iphone4 , so O2 have made there sales advisors push the £50 a month deal with the free handset and mention that they can downgrade to £35 after 9 months ,then about 6 months after iphone4 has been released they change there tarrif so you can downgrade to £45 deal and once you do this you except there new tarrif and cannot downgrade any further, so they will have loads of people on stuck on high contracts

Not apple related but when I got my desire they said the same and I started on 35 a month asked to be downgraded after 9 months and had no problems (I pay 20 now) this was about 5 months ago though.

I do no they are stricter on apple stuff though, but thats what you get for buying into it..

Was it a 24 month contract?

£50 x 24 = £1200

The only justification for any contract like that is if you need 900+ minutes, and even then you're being shafted.

I hope you can get it lowered.

You been had........... why didn't you just get a 3GS instead? or is it because you wanted to follow "the crowd".

Why would he want a 3GS, the iPhone 4 hardware is massively superior. Surely he uses the camera now and again, and the screen is much nicer, same goes for the battery.
