Just passed my test! What next?

Do you need a car though?

If you don't need it, may I suggest saving the money, get a taxi when you need to and get it when you need it. The older you are, especially over 25, the cheaper it will be. It really is no point getting a car if you are sacrificing too much of your other part of your life for something that sits on the drive a lot.

best option on this is buy and insure the chassis of a moped or a 2cv and start racking up NCB cant really crash a car that doesnt move ;) also you could keep the car in a better postcode area, any family in the country?

My oldest brother did this he got banged up for driving drunk (not his finest moment) when he got his ban lifted he had to retake test, passed but couldnt insure his MR2 anymore. So he bought a non runner 2CV left it at my parents in west wales. Cost him 300 3rd party 1st year then 200. 3rd year his mr2 turbo was £890 fully comp (age 29).

Worked for him, ive known a few farmers locally do similar insuring say tractors with NFU to rack up NCB from age 16 they are in beemers at 21

Lot of insurers wont let you transfer NCB from 2 wheels to 4, so the 2CV or a mini would a better option if you can find one.

thanks for more advice, I do want a car, whilst I don't need one the fact of the matter is it's far more convenient than public transport and quicker. I figure I'm going to have to do a first year at some point, may as well start now and work on getting a ncb under my belt by the time I'm 25 and I still live at home so it's better doing it now whilst I have the expendable cash.

Try ringing some of the companies direct. It may also be worth trying another car. See if you can stretch to one of the older 1.0 Toyota Yaris' there isnt much cheaper to insure than one of those.

It will probably cost you more to buy than a Focus though so may not be any cheaper overall.

Well I'm going to save up for a couple more paydays and see where that gets me, should have best part of 2k in about 6/7 weeks time.

edit: good shout on the yaris, I can get one insured for about £2200 so that's a bit of a saving.

I recently got my first car and it was a choice between basically a Fiesta 1.25 and a Focus 1.6 - in the end I ended up with a Fiesta 1.25 and I love it :D

It's truly awesome and worth every penny. So much better than crappy public transport! Wish I did it years ago. :D

pfft I've been walking everywhere, only time I've used public transport in the last year is going to visit the grandparents in brum and going on dates :)

I wish I'd done it when I was 17, should have done too, I had the spare money but I blew it.

That is still pretty insane. I would have thought you can get it lower than that. Try ringing the companies directly and see what they can do.

I wouldn't just take it as is but I know I should be prepared to fork over that much, had a couple of friends of similar age, better postcodes, pass a few months ago, paying more than what I'm looking at and no one was interested in giving them anything off the stated prices online.

a mate's offered me a '98 micra Gx for £850, going to try and knock him down a bit as it's done a fair few miles but me and a mechanic mate are going to have a look at it on Friday all being well, it passed it's MOT in june with no advisories and he's going to put/has put 6 months tax on it so could be a good buy. not my first choice of car but the insurance for that particular one is the lowest quote I've had so far.

Skoda Fabia Classic 1.2 (early to mid 2000s) is Group 1 insurance so should be very cheap to insure.

Classic cars could be considered. Classic mini or beetle are group 1 if you can find one.

My first car at 18 was a Mini 1275 GT. Brakes were dreadful mind... Just don't crash the thing. My sister smacked it into the back of another car at not particularly high speed and she wouldn't have wanted to crash it much faster...

I've been looking at buying my first car recently and was actually surprised at how low the quotes were! No NCB as it'll be my first car, aged 21 and these are the sorts of fully comp quotes I've been getting with both parents added as named drivers:

1999 Honda Accord 3.0l V6 - £1400
2003 Honda I-Vtec 2.3l - £1100
2001 Nissan Almera Sport 1.8l - £830
2000 Seat Ibiza Cupra Sport GTI 2.0l 16v - £970 (VERY tempted by this!)

Pretty gobsmacked by these. I remember a year ago I was getting quotes in the range of £1600 for a 1.6 Focus, but then I didn't try adding my parents on as named drivers back then.

These were all with Elephant by the way, found through compare the market. Fully comp and £500 voluntary excess specified, though it wasn't much different at £350.

That really can't be right... I'm getting quotes of between 3 or 4 grand with both parents (12 years no claims) named on 1.4l cars :( Same age as you as well. **** living in Hackney :(

If I was female it would be half as much. Now if I can find a good surgeon for about a grand.....

£800-£1200 in line what the Admiral group was quoting me with 0 NCB for your average hatchback. Everyone else was double that or more. Really who going to buy insurance for £7000?! especially when the same comparison site quoting you £1000
