Handing a 40" TV on Metal studs/plasterboard?

Lol no, do not do this. Only a complete idiot would hang something so heavy on board alone.

Most of the metal studding I have seen are like meccano with sets of predrilled holes so they can just assemble like lego.

I wonder if yours is like this. If so it would make it easy to mount bracketry into the stud with proper metal stud fixings rather than relying on self tappers etc.

Is there masonry directly behind the metal studding? or is this a partition wall?

Its a partition wall. The TV weighs 31 Kg but that is the boxed weight. Nothing else going onto it other than the TV.

you spread the load over several fixings and it should be fine.

OR get a stud detector - find the studs and screw into the wood...

this +1

:)

If that was the case he wouldn't have made the thread.

from the OP:

Hi there

I was going to put up my tv onto the wall but found out I have metal studs instead of wood. Can these still be used to support a 40" TV?

Thanks for any advice.

Your options would seem to be:

Risking it with plaster plugs

Toggle bolts & try to make use of the metal studding if possible

or for more work - cut into the dry wall, re-enforce with some MDF and then mount on that.

Use a flat/tilt bracket and just fix 6 plasterboard fixings/rawls. It'll be fine.

You'll be paranoid about it for around a month, but it'll soon drift from your mind.

It'll be fine with just the toggles. :p But yes, try and anchor to the metal stud. Carefull it isn't just a route for power cables though before you go through it.

I've read that people have hung their own TVs on just the plasterboard alone, in some cases using only two fixings... BUT if it were me:

I would definitely fix into at least the metal studs. Personally if I was doing it I would build a small frame into the partition wall and fix onto that and re-plasterboard but appreciate that's not for everybody and does come with an extra cost and takes time. I myself would rather do it that way just because of the cost of the TV and having an accident but this may be a little over the top, but that's me :p

Thankfully I don't have this issue in our new house as any televisions we have are all on external walls so if we did want to mount any I could fix through the plasterboard into the breeze block. Definitely go through the stud work in my opinion.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Hopefully I am not posting any of the following threads:

"How to re-plaster a wall"

"Is my TV covered by accidental insurance if it is my fault?"

"Should my dog be this flat?"

Simply not true. OP is fine to hang on board alone provided he spreads the weight over a numer of fixings. My 48" plasma (which must weight double a modern 40" TV) hanging on board alone for 4+ years is testament to it.

Plasterboard is fine for bearing reasonable weight provided you spread the load and use anchor bolts rather than expecting screws to hold in the plaster. When I put the bracket up I lifted my entire body weight onto it before I put the TV on there and it was rock solid (as it has been ever since). If he was putting something 60"+ up then I'd be more thoughtful but a 40" is absolutely fine.

if the plaster gets damp at all there will be big problems!

Well granted but that's a bit like saying if you hang your TV on wood and it goes rotten there are going to be big problems.

When hanging a TV you should always over-engineer the solution. If your plasterboard gets damp it will loose all integrity. If someone leans on the TV, or something catches on it you don't want the bare minimum of support.

But, but, but... if a meteor hits your house then your brick is going to be shattered and your TV will fall so you really need to mount it on an Unobtanium block with Crystal bolts.
