Red Arrow crashes near Bournemouth

High Flight

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God

Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee, Died in his Spitfire aged 19, 1941

You have no idea how much a pain my job is about to become. :o

Very sorry to hear about the loss. The Reds are one of the few things this country can be genuinely proud of. I can only imagine the kind of distress losing a member of such a tight knit team will cause.

RIP

If he did indeed keep the plane away from the houses (which I am sure he did) he did something truly heroic. Top respect.

RIP, it's hard to imagine anything like this happening, I've seen the reds on many occasions and it's always seemed almost impossible for anything like this to happen after so many flawless routines.

Wonder what will happen for the rest of the season..?

RIP :(

We went down to watch the show today and the Reds put on the best display I have seen for ages. They had a continent of blue sky to play in and as usual a ripple of applause came up after they finished even at the quiet end of the beach where we were sitting.

Among our group was a Spanish friend who had never seen a display like it, and it made me so proud to hear how impressed he was by the display.

What a sad and tragic piece of news to hear at the end of such a lovely day, condolences to friends and family :(

I was watching them from my bedroom window with my wife and kids, so sad to think that just a few minutes later one was gone. My little boy (who's 4) was so excited and happy to see them, he was in awe of them, and it was a good display.

Such a strange mix of emotions to think you're watching them one minute then everyone's talking about such a tragic thing the next.

RIP.

Red Arrows flew over my house few weeks ago when they did Blackpool/Southport

Mother of god they are fast, heard them coming and ran outside and they stayed in formation gone in 5 seconds.

What a job, what a way to go.
