hey guys just brought a

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-336-WD

along with a new z68 motherboard and i5 2500k!

very happy with the performance and have put a fresh install on windows on this hard drive using it as my main.

however it seems to be quite noisy compared to my old 160gb, like a rough noise when loading.

was just wondering if this is normal? its not extremely loud so to speak, but noticable compared to what i had before!

thanks :)

Hey Kinger! glad you've got the system up and running mate.

I've got the same hard drive and can't say I've noticed it to be particuarly loud, occasionally I may hear the slight scraping sound you describe but that's normal with mechanical hard drives, as long as you aren't hearing any clicking, which could mean a damaged drive then it's probably ok.

hey all!

sorry for the late reply was away camping!

i dont think its clicking smit, more of the scraping noiselike when its loading something but not occasionally, it seems to do it a lot on boot up and even whilst idle. its as if its under load even when its not!

do you reckon overclockers would replace it now that its been used? unless im being too fussy it may just be normal as you say but im unsure if it should be this consistent.

to the others, it doesnt sound like any sort of case related movement etc but i will look into your ideas once ive unpacked my stuff!

other than this the new parts seem great!

If you've had the drive less than 7 working days you can return it under the Distance Selling Regulations no questions asked.

You could then buy a Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB

Samsung F3 all the way:

7,200-RPM terabytes from Hitachi, Samsung, Seagate, and WD face off

hmm im unsure now, after reading a few user reviews people seem to say its quite a noisy drive so maybe its not faulty, and im just listening out for it too much now ha! unsure! may try this bungee mod though!

Alright Kinger, wondered where you'd got to.:D

Doesn't seem as if it's faulty from your description, but if you're not happy, i'd contact overclockers and see if they'll swap it for another of the same model so you can make a noise comparison.

It might also be worth checking performance via a hard disk benchmark utility, if it's down on expected performance then it could well be faulty, not sure which benchmark software people use nowadays, but I've previously used a utility called HD tach (iirc), should be free to download. You should aslo be able to find approximate, expected performance levels of the drive if you google around.

I recommended that drive due to owning one and it having performed so well, mine is around 2 years old now though, so it's possible they've made alterations to the drive during that time. Don't think you'll have a problem with swapping out for a completely different model if that's what you'd rather do..

hey mate! its great i really appreciate your recommendation and i think its fine to be honest, now that ive actually had a chance to sit with my computer since putting it togeather :D

the drive seems really fast and im getting nice boot speeds so im more than happy with the model. i think i will learn to live with the noise and i plan to get 2 more fans this week so that may drown it out :D

i may need to do some cable management as it looks a mess inside my pc, cables everywhere touching everything! i suppose this can all be fed around the back somehow! got the week off to have a play!

i will try the benchmark tool anyway just to be sure! as long as its not faulty ill put up with a little noise!
