Two machines identical..apart from one being 32-bit Win7 and the other 64-bit Win7 Both Dell laptops.. But identical hardware wise.

One machine has a memory operatings per sec @ 5.9 (the 64-bit one)

and the other has it at 7.5 (32-bit?)

I'm scratching my head as to why.... Both brand new machines..

Just curious.
 
Probably just WEI being poo as it has always been. I installed new RAM in my laptop and all of the other numbers changed too even though the new memory runs at the exact same specification as the old stuff.
 
Just a guess, but because the 32-bit can only use 3.5GB of RAM, it is basing the score on that as its limit. The 64-bit one, that can use more, will base the score on 16GB being its limit.
 
I even went as far as taking both machines apart and swapped over the memory chips.. Re-benched.. Still the same score. So i switched out HD's.. Same deal, re-benched and same scores..

So it has to be something O/S related... But that's a huge difference 5.9 instead of 7.5

Why does Win 7 64-bit talk to the mem so much slower than the exact same machine that's running 32-bit ?

Gotta be a bug. I cannot fathom for one minute that it should be like that. I even re-installed the 64-bit O/S cos I've got my teeth into this.

No I didn't take into account what you said, because its nonsense. There is NO valid reason as to why 64-bit O/S should be benchmarking the memory any slower than a 32-bit O/S

On other 64-bit laptops that are of a lower spec, they are coming back with faster marks.

Also why would I want to swap my install to a 32-bit and lose a gig ? I want it 64-bit and i want it to work as fast as the score its giving me on the 32-bit installation, thank you very much.
 
try a real benchmarking utility then?

also, read Jordans post again, he's surmises that 32 bit is 0-4gig max range and 64 bit is 0-16gig max range, you don't say how much RAM is in each machine. But guessing at 4gig you have a 4/4 machine and a 4/16 machine. I think the word is scope/range/scale? I get what Jordan97 means, you will too if you think about it.

Cool, thanks for that.. So now I'm confused why a different i7 laptop with 64-bit and only 4gig, i've seen has a higher score than 5.9 ???

At least I've seen it with my very own eyes now and officially from Microsoft.. But that doesn't explain why that other 64-bit machine is showing 7.3 It's nearly the same model.
 
Thinking about it, my home gaming rig is a 64-bit cpu Q6600, and that's only got 4gig, but the score is also much higher than 5.9 on that too.. So its not always the case.. Microsoft may have had some complaints though for them to put that note on their site.

So given that every laptop these days is 64-bit with 64-bit cpu's, and most laptops out there do not ship with over 4gig, then I'm assuming no laptops are showing higher than 5.9 ??

Unless the LATEST architecture of i7 CPU's are true 64-bit or something, hence only noticing this now?
 
So has anyone worked out why it shows only 5.9 on some 64bit CPU / 4g ram win7 64bit installs and not on others? Curious to know the reason.
 
I can get a WEI score of 5.9 with 4GB of RAM on my i5 2500K, when I turn the onboard graphics core off, I then get 7.7 which is right as the onboard GPU is hogging some RAM for itself. The PC still gets the same benchmark scores either way.

Yes, I've figured it out and all my curiosity is now answered. :D This is exactly the reason I am getting this on one 64-bit machine and not the other.. Its because this particular laptop has a new i7 2620m, which works alongside the new shared Intel HD 3000 gfx. Which is shares processing with the CPU and shares memory with the memory !!! Therefore it's taking away from the 4gig, and as you can see from the code, WEI is specifically limiting to 5.9. Problem would be fixed if I had 4gig, but 1meg below and boom, you're stuck to 5.9 only on score mind.. Anway, at least I now have the answer..
