New Star Trek in development - limited info inside

The young cast quote also has me worried. Look how SG-U turned out, they wanted to put more of a young spin on things too.

Either way I hope star trek comes back and hopefully it will offer something different, and not a prequel.

To be fair, many of the main cast/characters in sgu were on the older end up the spectrum.

Plus SGU was getting good in the last series - it just needed time to find out which path to take, something American TV executives either don't seem to understand or can't be bothered with :(

I'm hoping it's not going to be a dark Federation type show that they're hinting at since that wouldn't be in the spirit of Star Trek. I also think that Star Trek needs to stay away until about 2016 and we can have a new show then to celebrate the 50th anniversary.

The main reason Enterprise was cancelled was not that it was bad, in fact it was quite good for most of it, bar maybe season 2. It was mostly that Star Trek had been non-stop on the air for 17 or so years, the show and the audience were worn out.

"Much younger cast..." :(

As much as I'd love to get some more Trek, I still think it's too soon for a new series. Enterprise was starting to get good before it got canned, but there was a still a bad taste in the mouth from Voyager and DS9 (:p).

I just hope they don't go down the route of season long plots that always end with rubbish finales.

How about a series with 7 of 9 and T'Pol as the lead roles?

I'd settle for a direct to video movie. No complicated plot required... :D

I'd be interested to see a more arc driven Trek, you know in the style of something like LOST, BSG or SGU.

We've had almost two decades of continuous trek that all had Syndication in mind. Even the majority of Enterprise was episode of the week stuff, including a fair bit of season 3, which i quite enjoyed tbh with it's arc driven stuff.

The recent film had a huge budget...

Obviously it benefits from it?

What's the problem, i don't get it either :s.

An Arc driven Trek would work really well, they already did it to a certain degree in DS9 with the Dominion War story. It doesn't have to be as dark and gritty as the previously mentioned shows.

Personally i think with 4 series (not counting the original) consisting of over 25 seassons of what is mostly Adventure of the week stuff, i think the formula has run it's course. It's just been milked dry.

The new film took the franchise in a new 'cooler' direction, and kept many of the good points of Trek, and it worked really well. There's no reason a tv series can't accomplish the same.

I honestly don't see them risking a BSG style Star Trek show.

It's no coincidence that Stargate SG1 went on for longer and was far more successful than SG-U. In the end it comes down to profit from syndication, and being able to reel in views with monster of the week episodes. Yeah, I know, it's rubbish, but the industry still works that way.

We know that sci-fi works and is much more satisfying in an arc driven format, but it just doesn't do the business. Unless this airs on HBO, AMC, or a network with a record for producing character driven drama I honestly can't see a BSG style Star Trek show any time soon especially because of the size of the franchise.

That's not to say that a new show wouldn't be satisfying if it were monster of the week focused. We know it works. The biggest problem is just finding a way to make it fresh.

1) You don't need a huge budget to have a story arc.
2) The idea that a show needs a huge budget to have lots of shiny effects and explosions purely in order to compete with something that is aimed at a completely different audience is absurd. Star Trek has never been about massive fights in space (mostly), it's been about story. And, largely, about a future we'd ultimately all like to see unfold.

Yet another person who's completely missed the point of Star Trek

I'm not saying it has to be like BSG, if it has crap sets, costumes and CGI on top of the standard Star Trek bad acting and dialogue then it will have to do something very special for me to sit and watch it. :D
