Just moved down to Exeter on Tuesday. Went out yesterday to get some furniture to surprise my gf when she gets back from Paris after the weekend.

It was raining, but not very heavy at this point.

I was getting ready to pull into the inside lane once the bus lane ended -

Before I could do this the two cars infront of me stopped very quickly for no apparent reason. I *just* about managed to stop in-time, even with a good bit of distance between them and I. Unfortunately, the lady behind me was not so quick and went into the back of me. I don't know where she even came from, she hadn't been very close earlier - I can only assume she was distracted by lady problems :p

To my amazement, my SLK only received a split bumper and some scratches, whereas her Mitsubishi received a good deal of damage to the front bumper, headlight and bonnet.

Exchanged details, she admitted liability and I phoned Admiral when I got home (my insurance company) and they are sorting it all out (through her insurance).

Also have a good bit of chest and neck pain (had just finished stopping very hard, so my body was forward - the impact from behind sent me very quickly back into the seat). Went to A+E as a precaution, but mostly just bruising and soft tissue damage.

Considering how little driving I do I never expected to be posting here with an "accident" type thread.

Hows the whiplash?

Could have been worse tbh, but being my first accident I was surprised how uncomfortable even a relatively slow impact can be (although considering how she came out of nowhere she must have been doing a decent speed). Still have limited movement in my neck, in particular to the right side - I suspect because her front left of the car hit my rear right, so I guess there was a slight sideways force too. Had to stay longer in A+E since I had blurred vision in my right eye too.

Was a stressful day yesterday, but after I had finished phoning around I realised this might not end too badly. She was very nice about it (wouldn't expect anything else since it was her fault!) - if she had been paying attention and kept her distance it wouldn't have happened.

I am also glad my gf is in Paris at the moment, even though the accident wasn't my fault I would have felt very guilty had she been in the car.

Even more annoying, the two cars that brought the whole incident about carried on as if nothing happened (wish I could have gotten their details too for dangerous driving, but it all happened so quickly) - also, no one stopped to check we were OK

Getting an estimate on Tuesday. Hope it gets fixed soon as I am away for the last two weeks of September.

Have already spoken to a solicitor who is dealing with it all :)

It is unlikely they stopped for 'no apparent reason', its the person behinds job to follow at a safe distance. There is only one party to blame here - the person who hit you.

Sounds to me like the two cars infront of you were doing a crash for crash with you as the target...

Yes, the description of what happened in the O.P. seems to follow that M.O.....

Anyway, OP, do you have any sign of whiplash? - I'm curious, it seems a fairly high speed shunt yet I somehow suspect you feel ok today? - I hope so anyway! - its luck of the draw to a large extent, but does (if your ok) make a mockery of the compo chasers who submit claims after walking pace shunts.....

From the description I have given to a few friends and family, a number of them have said the same. The more I think about it the more dodgy it seems. As far as I can see there was nothing in-front of them (of course this was just from my perspective). I just don't understand why they would have needed to stop so abruptly - there were no pedestrians, no traffic (and you would see this well ahead of time). The only other reason I can see is that the two cars were having an angry exchange and the one at the front slammed on the brakes.

I doubt many other cars would have been able to stop in time. I am also surprised the car behind didn't push me into them. I think because it was on the rear right it pushed me around rather than directly into the two cars in-front of me.

I am glad the bumper took the damage, these cars are certainly built strong (German engineering I guess!).

I feel OK, but the neck is still sore (in particular on the right side) and I can't turn my head fully (it is also painful when I turn it as far as I can). The doctor seemed to think it was whiplash (but no damage to the spinal cord - they were worried about my eye for a bit though). My insurer and solicitor also think it is whiplash, but then I am not surprised by that :p

Where there is pain, there is a claim!

Seems justified in this instance though.....

Glad your more or less ok, that is the main issue I feel. :)

Rain in exeter (well I went past on m5 - heading to plymouth) around 9ish and weather was awful. But she simply ignored Highway code of safe distance!. Not had an accident yet but hope you get well soon and sorted quickly.

Can take ages for whiplash to properly fix...hows the right arm/shoulder? when i got hit side on by a police van (his fault and no i wasnt running from him :P) i had major whiplash and my right arm and shoulder were agony, couldnt hold a phone to my ear with my right arm for almost 3 months without my arm shaking and losing feeling, had all sorts of physio but in the end time sorted it!

A few days after getting my Honda Insight I decided to flick from 'D' into 'S' and put my foot on the clutch...

Crap! It doesn't have a clutch! That's a brake pedal! Fortunately I was going uphill and the guy behind in a Mazda6 wasn't following too closely and was paying attention.

I reckon he thought I was after crash for cash. Gave me an interesting hand gesture when we went our separate ways.

Old habits die hard and I've never owned an auto before. :(

Edit: Last year someone actually did plough into the back of me. Didn't even bother to claim on the insurance - let alone whiplash.

I think people are missing the wider point here.... what is your gf doing in Paris, why aren't you there :P

On a more serious note, I got rear ended by a woman driver distracted by her dog which was sat on the passenger seat, but I digress. Although at first glance there appeared to be no damage at all, I took her details and and had a garage have a look at the car as a precaution. A close inspection found, split bumper, split floor pan, and it cost ~£500 to get repaired.

Yay whippy compo!

I thought this was meant to help with lost earnings and physio yet you have an accident and are a bit stiff so you're wasting A&Es time and onto the solicitor within hours.

It's bonkers the way this industry is going.

Pro tip, try some paracetamol, add a bit of ibuprofen, probably set you back 50p for a weeks worth, see if it gets better in a day or two. If it does don't turn up to A&E looking like a tool and rip off a stupid whippy claim.

Do you have something against people using insurance for it purpose or something, or are you just trolling for the sake of it?

No I'm being honest, why are people contacting solicitors the day after an accident? How can you think about a compensation claim before you even know if you have a serious injury?
