Are there any IS200 owners on here?
I'm considering getting one and after a few bits of information,

What sort of MPG to you get when you either, drive it like Jesus, or heavy footed?
what does the tax cost and are they affected by the tax increase thing?

Reliability wise I would assume their pretty reliable but, if they do go wrong, what are costs like for parts?

pretty much just what are they like to live with?

Cheers for any pointers.

Peace

I've not owned one but seriously considered one as my last purchase and I can help with a few questions I think.

Mpg is around 25 combined iirc, reliability wise they're pretty much bullet proof and with the tax increase you'd be looking at around £400+ a year when it comes into play (atm it's about £200) this would be avoided if you went for a pre 2001 model.

Where did you do your research, BBC Gardeners World Magazine?

No, it's 29mpg combined.

Completely wrong. As every IS200 was registered prior to 26th March 2006, none of them are in the £460 a year tax bracket. The maximum tax you'll pay on an IS200 is £260 for a model registered after 1st March 2001.

The IS200 is, in my opinion, a pointless car. There is much to like about it but the engine completely ruins it and makes it a fundamentally pointless buy. It's a 2 litre 6 cylinder but it develops a fairly lame 150bhp and does 0-60 in the same time as a Mondeo diesel. This would be fine if it was followed up with decent fuel economy - but it isn't. The fuel economy:performance ratio is woeful, its simply unacceptable to be under 30mpg combined on a 2 litre 150bhp saloon car.

I did say around 25 and it was a few years ago that I looked and there was talk of large tax increases apparently they didn't happen, my humble apologies. All my info was gained from the is200 owners forum but as I said this was a few years back.

My Dad owned one for several years, I drove it quite a bit as well. It's not at all a bad car to drive, once you get used to the fact its by no means quick.

Also Fox, its 153bhp and combined is 28.8mpg :p

If you really want one, the IS300 makes more sense, and if you can find an Altezza it's a decent buy!

Dunno what to do now lol
I know they were a straight 6, 2 litre but I didnt think they would be that bad on the juice,
Leaning back towards an E46 again :/

By JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) the 1G-FE straight six in the IS200 produces 160bhp.

Not too hard to understand, surely?

Huh? The Altezza AS200 has 160ps, this is not an IS200 though.

They are not very fast and they are pretty thirsty. Cheap to buy though so maybe that makes up for it? Lack of cruise in manual models is a bit lame too.

It was my understanding that the AS200 was marketed as the IS200 in EU?

They're not particularly nippy, but quite fun to drive nonetheless - although the list of cars to compare to is limited for me, and mainly to hatchbacks!

But in all fairness you could say for example that the 2JZGTE made 276bhp in home trim, but as an export engine it was considerably different despite the identical engine code and made 326bhp, so maybe the reserve is true here?

Lots of engines make a bit more power in the JDM models, most is down to the 100ron fuel allowing a bit more ignition advance and so on in the mapping.

A mate of mine has an Altezza which he says has an extra 60bhp over the IS200, which could even out the under powered angle,

I basicly decided on the IS200/Altezza as I wanted a jap saloon, but there isnt much to choose from,
The only other thing I can think of is an accord which doesnt really do anything for me,

I keep leaning towards a e46 323 which is the same sort of class/spec
