****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

question time folks.

ive had my sg2 for a few months now.

i use go contacts, go dialer, go messaging (or whatever its called)

everytime i update either of the apps and then launch it from something i have to choose it over the stock ones.

is there a way to stop this?

I think when those apps get updated during the update process they are uninstalled and the new version installed, so i don't think there is a way to stop it.

Thanks, do you just use ODIN to update the radio (MODEM_I9100XXKH3_REV_02_CL1050544.tar.md5)? Or can you use clockwork/rommanager?

You can use Clockwork, but I always use ODIN for some reason :)

You might have to extract the tar.md5 for it to be flashable inside Clockwork, though I haven't tried so I can't say for certain!

Before I update my phone for the first time can I just check a couple of things :)

Downloaded KH3 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 and let it do its self zip. This gives me a single .tar file called:
GT-I9100_XEO_I9100XXKH3_I9100XXKH3_I9100OXAKH3

So next step is put this in the PDA of odin. Put phone in download mode and then connect to computer with kies off. I then use Odin to update.

Have I missed any steps or is that all good? Having had the phone a month I have I hope finally plucked up the courage to update and then root it..

Yeah, that's right :).

The part about Kies being off, make sure there are no processes running in the background as there normally is for a lot of people after installing which ends up messing with their first flash, which in turn makes them all worried that they've bricked their phone :D.

You'll also probably want to stop Kies from auto running on startup in MSconfig as it adds quite a lot to boot time (and obviously leaves background processes running meaning more chance of screwing up a future flash :).

Apart from that you seem to be ready to flash, it's pretty straight forward but the first time with such an expensive phone can be a bit worrying :D.

As said in the guide: DON'T TOUCH ANY OPTIONS, just add the .tar via the PDA button and click start when Odin is ready (You'll know by "Added!!" in the message box and the yellow box under ID:COM).

Where are radio updates published? I'm running CM7 with radio I9100XXKG6, is this the latest?

Thanks :)

KH3 is the latest Modem http://www.multiupload.com/W0L6QEI2AE.

It's recommended to use that one, I've only really seen good comments about it tbh, unlike other modems which seem to vary by provider/area etc. :).

Edit: The above Modem link is a CWM Recovery flashable zip iirc :), as I prefer that to Odin/CWM App.

Thanks :) All sorted on CM7 + latest modem now.

I was using litening rom which was crashing+rebooting several times a day, epic fail. Glad to be on CM7 now though significantly prefer ASOP builds.

Woohoo phone is rooted and still works! phew :)

So next noobish question: I would like to loose the yellow triangle. From this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 with the firmware there is also the stock kernal: XXKH3

So do I just flash this in ODIN and the triangle is gone or do I need to do something more complicated. Reading another thread it talks of using a Z-file?

Cheers in advance for the help

I tried CM7 earlier, I was surprised but I actually preferred the Samsung look :(. Ended up restoring back to my VillainRom backup.

I do still intend to give CM7 a proper test in the future, I made sure once I had it all set up how I wanted that I made a CWM backup so that when I have time and can be bothered I can go back to it and give myself a proper chance to get used to it, as from what most people say about it I think I should give it a proper chance (when it's out of nightlies probably, assuming you don't have to wipe when coming from the nightlies).

Btw, the ". androidsecure" (something like that) folder that CM7 creates in the SD card, when I restore back to CM will it matter that I deleted that? I didn't realise what it was when I deleted it :(. CBA trying it in the future if my backup won't work :p.

For now I'm gonna stick to VillainRom as (with Ninphetamine kernel) I get more than enough battery (I charge my phone nightly no matter what the battery is on, I could easily get 2 days with my usage though) and I like how VillainRom doesn't enforce some theme that I don't want unlike most other ROMs.

Yes the Zimage file is flashed using CWM Manager, this just updates the kernel and removes the triangle.

USB jig is so much simpler though, and resets the counter on how many times you have flashed.

Cheers all sorted and now ready to have a play with custom roms tomorrow :)

I know lol

Im abit sleepy now and not sure whether to try Villain or Batista first so will sleep on it. My final noobish question of the day...

Ive seen lots of mentions of Ninphetamine and am a little intrigued as to what it does. Its obviously a kernal and I see some roms use it (such as Villain) but it also looks like you can replace any kernal with it. In a nutshell is it worth using?

hmm wonder when we get 2.3.4. sensation just got it.

I'd just flash KH3 tbh, I don't really see the point in waiting for the official release since Kies is a horrible PoS :D.

As I said a bit further up I'm using VillainRom and would recommend it. It's has good battery life/speed and keeps the stock UI, so If you like the stock UI definitely give it a try.

If you want/don't mind a different theme Batista/Leomar are also worth looking at, lots on here and XDA use these :).

Ninphetamine is worth using yes. I think some other kernels might have better battery life (atleast they did when someone tested how long the battery takes to drain with the screen on the whole time) but I'm using it and it's completely stable, my battery life is very good and more than sufficient for my needs :).

You can also use SetCPU(an app bought from Android Market) to either overclock (this is overclockers after all) or to undervolt (gives even better battery life), or you can do both ofcourse :).

Oh and incase you didn't know, you obviously don't have to use Ninphetamine but you do have to use a kernel, as (from what I understand, which is little to be fair :p) it's basically how the OS interacts with the hardware (or with the drivers?) and it manages things like memory and stuff :).

When you say your family shares calendars, how do they do it in the web version of Google Calendar? Can you post a screenshot of your browser version of the Calendar?

Calendar sync posts always crop up every few weeks when a new Android device gets some uptake :p

I have issues were I don't think my calendar syncs as it should ... not too great ... rarely happens though. If I notice I just clear and resync.

Which ROM?

I'm using a new ROM as of the middle of the night, I kind of woke up and felt like using another ROM, is this weird? :p

I'm using this:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220283&highlight=dive

It's as close to AOSP as it gets but retains all the Samsung stuff should you wish to install them one by one. I have just restored the Samsung Calendar, Dive, Messaging and some other tweaks like silent camera, Stagefright Codec, no boot sound etc via the Extras app the ROM ships with. It's also considerably smaller in size to other ROMs and very fast/smooth.

It's like Cyanogen, except everything is still hardware accelerated and you have a fully functioning HD camcorder with tweaks all over :p
