yes its upgrade time again :) normally i wouldn't upgrade with just one game in mind i think it may be worth it, my price range is ~£100 (little over is ok) but i don't think i will be buying untill it gets a little closer to release day (may buy around end of Sept or start/middle of Oct)

the 2 main cards that appeal to me right now are the GTX460 (in range) and the 560Ti (too pricey now) but if prices drop enough i may 'meet them half way' and break my budget a little

so any advise for me?
and some of you may know that im a bit of an nVidia fan boy BUT im seeing huge potential in AMD cards so im also open to any suggestion of AMD i could buy instead

If you're after something in that price range, you're going to be looking at playing BF3 under 1080p resolutions if you want decent settings. I'm currently running a GTX460 768mb, it performs brilliantly around the 1280x720 mark (constant >60fps on BC2 with all settings maxed), but you'll slowly bump down to the 30fps mark if you want to be going 1920x1080/1200. I'm personally looking to upgrade to a GTX570 before BF3/Skyrim/everything else.

Have you considered going SLI?
It'd be dependant on your PSU being able to take a 2nd, but that really does seem to be the best way on a tight budget.

The OcUK 6870 seems a very good deal at £130, however Bit-Tech still have the 460 in there budget system in this months Buyers Guide, and they seem to be around your budget. They mention the 6870 is a little more expensive and pushes up their overall cost (the whole build needs to be to a set budget) but dont say whether they think it'd be worth the extra £20-30ish.

As for upgrading for 1 game... BF3 looks to be worth buying an entire system for :D

from the alpha feedback it seems to perform better than bc2 which makes sense with a more optimised engine if i was you i would keep my eyes open for a bargin around the 120-150 mark
but oc do have some 460gtx for under a ton and you could allways wack in a 2nd card

latest news from developer of Battlefield 3 is that 580's in SLI will be good to completely max itout (presumably at 1080p).

New cards are around the corner now (Q4 2011/Q1 2012) that will probably be able to play Battlefield 3 maxed out on a single GPU.

Got any more info on this?

I ask as I'm half expecting my GTX260 to not quite cut it with BF3, that said, it runs BFBC2 @ 1680x1050 superbly maxxed out - even with 16xFSAA! (That said, I usually knock it back to 8x as 16x seems overkill and tbh I can't tell the difference! :o )

Seconding this; we need a source to show benchmarks for BF3 on various cards. I find it extremely difficult to believe it is less taxing on a system than BC2 was.

I get nice fps on bad company 2 with my 560ti (my second one comes monday for some sli sexyness xD) I can try and make a video if you like?

I was in the alpha and the settings that ran at was less taxing then bc2. It was running on my old 5830 at the time at 1680x1050. Before I upgraded GPU and screen.

BC2 has all 4 of my cores at 70% with full settings, bf3 was 50/60%. Now bf3 looked really nice but I dont think it was running with full settings, I could not find away to check so I think it was set at a certain setting. I had no slow downs what so ever on the 5830. So I think my 2gb 6950 will run this on full with ease.

Cheers

My only advice would be wait for the beta! It's out soon and everyone will have a much better idea about performance. Everything else is just conjecture as the Alpha had very little in the way of graphics options.

It's a multiplayer game - you don't really want to be using AA in it or maxing anything anyhow.

Just stick a 460 in there and play on medium @ 1080p.

The beta should be a good indication of the final product, but you have to remember that whilst the Alpha didn't have the full graphics on, it was also unoptimized. So, the beta should both have more graphics options, but also be much more optimized, so it should even out.

A good observation, but personally I reckon I'll end up upgrading regardless. Will be nice for single player, and you can't deny it'll be useful for Skyrim, ME3, SR3 and all the other holiday releases (also for when the next Assassins' Creed gets to PC; Brotherhood has been the most taxing game I've run so far).

Oh yea I agree. I'm hoping to upgrade from my 5770 to a 6950 for the new releases. Could wait for the 7 series, but I'm too impatient! I wantz it nowz!

am looking at upgrading current card is a evga 560ti and a q9550 looking at going i5 and not sure if to go for a 580 or keep the 560ti and wait till next year for the 6000 series
