Most powerful 775 Mobo and why?

My sons DS3 - the P35C one has 4xDDR2 and 2xDDR3 RAM slots and it was the first board that I got, that took DDR3

Im sure you know just how sickening it was for me, to have just bought 8GB DDR2 for my Server ( why I dont know? - Its not even serving anything anymore since I got the NAS box ) and then to get that DS3 and find out it had DDR3 slots too!

Had I know that, I would have held off and used that board for myself!

So yeah, the prices etc are pushing us over but then my main PC now has 16GB and Id never have been able to do that on the others, but at the same time, lets be honest but for most users, 2GB is plenty and for gamers I doubt that you really need more than 4GB. I only have the 16GB purely as a show-off thing but in truth, even with running a handful of VMs I dont think I use anywhere near that much.

I also just read again, you mentioned the Q9550

I have one of those too!

Funnily enough, some time ago, I did a straight swap, of one of my Intel Bundles for an AMD one.

I did not have any AM2 / AM3 Setups you see, and this guy had a Gigabyte DS3 with an AMD 9550 CPU.

Now, this got me because I already have 3 Intel DS3 Boards that are all different and here was an AMD one, plus I also have a Q9550 CPU and now here was on offer a 9550 AMD CPU too, so I grabbed it, and did a swap for a in intel Q6600. I know I dropped performance but like I said I have plenty of others so its no biggie, but now I had both and Intel and an AMD DS3 + 9550 which just made me giggle.

I still have them both.

Both are running 4GB Geil 6400 RAM and both are running a Stripped RAID setup with 2x320GB Drives and both are running Win 7/64 and how sad am I?

Loved my Gigabyte EP45-DS3. Bought it for £80 new and a Q6600 for £105 off the bay back in September 08. My first proper build, lasted me almost 3 years :D But then I bought my laptop and it wasn't used that much from then on so I sold it.

Ran all it's life at 3.2GHz (and it still is with it's new owner). Ridiculously easy to overclock. Only gripe was that the NB ran a bit toasty but I installed a 50mm fan to fix that.

Fond memories :D

Yes, the EP45 is great. I have one of those too!

As for the Heatsinks, this is also my biggest gripe too, but the Zalman NB Fanless coolers are a great solution.

All mine are done with those and I even have 2 spares ( one the square and the other the spread out one ) just for when I get hold of another DS3... Quite probably wont anymore, but thats how much I love those boards... I have the bits ready just in case I do get one.

Foxconn Black Ops here, just resurected it from having run it in 2009, notoriously picky with ram and a bios that would baffle most, but when you dial it all in right nothing can touch it. currently running my q6600 @ 3.4 425fsb 1700 DDR3 just ordered a megaharlems so I can hit 3.6 :D

I dont rate Foxconn all that much.

The few boards that I have had have been ok, but none have survived for long.

Abit and Gigabyte are the ones boards that I would ever buy new, and since Abit are no longer around, that only leaves... Well do the math. I would also add Iwill boards but do they still exist? The few I did have were astonishingly reliable, if a little slower than my others.

I must admit, I wouldn't but another one and the Black Ops was a one off for it's generation. The only other board that was best in its class was the Asus P5Q Pro. Getting a 775 board now that is any good well you'll be looking second hand really.

Iwill was brought by Flextronics. Anything wrong with Asus?

Oh yes I agree and buying new these days is questionable, and the only reason would be as an emergency board replacement or is cash is tight, but almost everything I own is second hand. Its only my main Pc thats new and a few thigns like Hard Drives and DVD Drives and so on... Almost everythign else is second hand.

I have had nothing but failure after failure with ASUS.

The only board that I had that was any cop was the A8N-SLI and I have only recently got rid of that... It was a flawless board and I actually miss it, but every other ASUS has bee na pile of cack and I have no intention of EVER buying one again. If I was given one, Id sell it and buy somethign else, I truly hate them that much.

ASUS P5E3 Deluxe/WiFi-AP@n

because i have 2 :p

no, in all seriousness, that one or it's newer x48 based brother (P5E3 Premium/WiFi-AP@n)

why, "X" chipsets not "P's" and can you say "everything and the kitchen sink" ?

It's not going to win any overclocking competitions, but bang for buck, can't fault it, i'm typing from one based on that right now, Q6600 @2.83ghz, 1600 rated FSB, 4GB CAS 6 Mushkin DDR3, X-Meridian 7.1 Audio (but also onboard SoundMax High Definition audio) USB3.0 pcie card, Win 7 ultimate on a Mushkin Callisto Deluxe SSD powered bya PCP&C TurboCool 860

built in wifi, 300Mbps IEEE 802.11n and add to that fully functional built in hardware based linux micro OS (Expressgate)

like i said, bang for buck, can't be beaten in my opinion, and is why i went for one for my main rig too, only went for the deluxe over the premium because of the expansion slot configuration)

the 790i gets my vote, I'm still using mine day in, with a q9450 @ 3.6ghz. I've not had reason to upgrade yet. Along with my gtx470 and vert2. The old girl copes with everything i give it. Click on my sig for pics..

IMHO it's one of the ASUS P5Q line using the P45 chipset and ICH10R southbridge - the best of these is probably the P5Q Deluxe (though the P5Q-E, P5Q Pro and P5Q Pro Turbo are great too). These boards overclock brilliantly (often hitting 500MHz FSB) and support Crossfire at x8/x8 PCIE v2.0 speed.

The p5q deluxe is probably the best motherboard ive ever owned, very easy to oc on, very cool running board and extremely stable. They can be bought pretty cheaply now as well.
