Deus Ex: Human Revolution - SPOILER THREAD

As a side topic, anyone read the novel that goes with Human Revolution, Icarus Effect?

It does link into the game, very subtle link but I really enjoyed the book. Interesting also, the HR trailer with Adam dreaming he has wings flying towards the sun and then gets cut down has a significants to the book.

Recommended read.

I understand what you mean and agree in a way, but on the flipside i am sick of playing games where you have a dialogue option which seems innocuous, but turns out to be something which forces an ending/path on you. The witcher 2 and Dragon age 2 are bad examples of this imo.

It may seem like it is kind of "dumbed down" in a way, but it isn't necessarily bad i think.

Ah, not played either of those games yet, so I will make sure to look out for those points!

The original DE wasn't like that, though. You pursued your end-goals with fore-thought and prior awareness. There was no "WTF" moment about it. You worked towards a clear ending despite feeling conflicted whilst you were actually fighting for it. That's what made it far stronger that HR, imho.

That depends how they do it. Deus Ex you had conversations with completely different people over infolink about what you should do and were given very different objectives (even if they did all take you to basically the same area of Area 51). HR you follow the same path until an arbitrary decision is made at the end.

There is no reason they couldn't have multiple scenarios that you actually had to choose and do objectives to see through. I mean the whole 'self destruct' button down a completely random corridor next to the already completely random video transmit buttons was so forced.

Hated the ending of this game and that includes the final boss, like most I just hacked the console and watched it die.....what was the point.

The Plasma rifle is so pointless for such an ace weapon

The only load out to use in my opinion is:
  • Stun Gun - Ammo is everywhere throughout the game and it is really useful for sneaking about
  • Pistol - with silencer and red dot it is useful for killing up until you go to Picas where the enemies get a great deal harder
  • Revolver with explosive rounds is super effective against bosses in my opinion, just stun them and then fire a few rounds into the head
  • Shotgun - Great for killing anything tough and again ammo is everywhere
  • Sub machine gun - Ammo is so plentyful that you may as well use it instead of the pistol from the Picas level onwards
  • Take a few EMP grenades to take down anything big and metal or failing that a few mines does the trick

Forget the rocket launcher it takes soooo long to fire and doesn't one shot anything you would really want to use it for
Plasma is far to late game
Laser has far to little ammo
Sniper rifles are naff, they take far to long to aim whilst exposing you to fire and I rarely get distance as most battles are in a corridor or office
The stun rifle is bugged and ammo is almost non existant
The radius stun gun thingy is only useful for the late game and even then a gas nade is better

Augments:
  1. Hacking first all the way to the top
  2. Double take down which is by far the best single augment
  3. Stealth second all the way to the top
  4. Heavy lifting next
  5. Jump is very useful
  6. Maybe smash and icarus to get to the other hidden areas
  7. Then shield for later hacks
Basically initially focusing on getting the extra pracis points/XP in entirety to allow you get buy the other upgrades quickly

After this get cloak to max and basically you can now walk through the game and play it however you feel
you don't need the social upgrade as you can still get silver tongue easily without it (especially second walkthrough)

I loved the game, but the endings were as cheap as you could make them, the game is sooooo overbalanced towards hacking and then stealth I really find it hard to build any other way because you get more points for doing both.
Brilliant game, but honeslty I didn't feel it was a sucessor to Deus Ex, just a really good game in itself.

Agreed about the plasma rifle. Had been going through the last part of the game kitting out with Heavy gun, laser rifle, grenades etc. and had been trying my best to keep them for the end - just to find out that I just needed to take out 3 turrets!!! Was a little disappointed to say the least.

Then again, I am glad they didn't go for stupidly tough and unrealistic boss fights.

Did anyone else notice the emails between the hacker Dutchman and Kevin Mitnick (infamous real life hacker from long ago), think it was somewhere in Tai Yong Medical.

Weapons:
- Stun gun
- Pistol
- Tranq rifle
... and that's it until you rescue Tong, then the grenade launcher is great for the last couple bosses, especially the one where your augments have all crashed.

Best augs imo:
Hacking to level 5 first, I also like getting the detection upgrades but this isn't necessary.
Then cloaking to max.
Quick energy recharge so you're not waiting for a billion years for the damn batteries :p
Make sure you get the smash through walls upgrade before you leave Detroit. There's a smashable wall in the sewers with a praxis disk behind it so you can basically get the aug for free :)
The smart vision upgrade. This thing is awesome and uses next to no power
Double takedown

Nice augs:
- The landing system so you can read that book in Tai Yong Medical and save you some time jumping off rooftops
- The sprint speed upgrade and the lung upgrades so you can run for longer, faster, and breathe poison gas, if only because I was tired of running everywhere.
- The super strength aug for a couple of easy secret passages to save you time/hassle

Yeah I really liked that one. Anyone notice all the DX1 characters that showed up in email conversations?

- There's an email on old man Tong's computer from his son, where he says he's thinking of leaving Hengsha and setting up a business in Hong Kong (hehe)...
- There's an email from Sarif on Athene Margoulis' computer saying to screen any calls from an annoying L. DeBeers (the illuminati leader in the freezer in Everett's house in DX1)
- There are countless emails from a J. Manderley, who appears to be running the show and taking over FEMA (no references to Walton Simons, I guess because he doesn't take over FEMA until Page made it happen in DX1)

Any others?

The only weapon I used was the tranq rifle, the trick with it is hitting the soldiers at the right part in their patrol so they crumple behind a crate.

The ending that felt most natural to me was the Darrow ending, blowing the place up was a cop out, Sarif and Taggart were both morally void*. (Sarif especially so). If i'd revelled in my augmentation I would have leaned towards Sarif.

*actually they were egoists that had their own best interests in mind, and as much as they protested otherwise humanity would have suffered under either viewpoint and the power they stood to gain.

The best weapon is the double barrelled shotgun (avaliable with Debug Mod). So many lols in my second playthough with this weapon. Also the Mod reveals a Silenced Sniper Rifle. Both these are in game items that the mod unlocks so why they were removed/where you can get them normally I have no idea.

That assumes you're using the same playstyle every trip though. Sure you could say max hacking straight off because you get a stupid amount of exp for it and access to lots of gear but in reality quite a lot of the early stuff you can access without hacking at lvl5 so really its up to your playstyle. I maxed Cloak immediately on my second playthrough, followed by a scattering of inventory, hacking, energy regen and jump height. Could probably have got away with lvl3 or 4 max in hacking and gone to lvl5 a bit later but no worries.

The 'Chop Shop' you need high jump to get the code and a lvl2 Hack to break into the bedroom and get the code from the computer for the Praxis Point.
Praxis Point is in the sewers for an explosive or a punch through walls.
I'm pretty sure theres a code for that lvl5 garage near the 2 drug dealers I just can't remember where I got it.
The helipad lvl5 lock you need to break in to a few offices to track the code to it from Maliks computer.
The Sniper Rifle hidden on the Gas Station roof you either need lvl4 hacking or high jump to reach.

Combined with Cloak they can be really useful to pop out and drop someone out of sight. Hilarious no-scoping with the Crossbow, just line up the shot from cover, pop Cloak on, shoot some guy in the side of the head and pin him to the wall in front of his mate :p

Is anyone else getting really irritated by the complete lack of numbers? I mean seriously are console gamers numerically challenged or something? Deus Ex, you got rate of fire, ammo capacity, damage, reload speed, recoil, all with accurate numbers. Here we get some stupid bar that doesn't actually mean anything. Is putting a number to the bar really that difficult?
I'm in the Alice Garden Pods now. The big guys who use a Heavy Rifle... the Sniper Rifle or Crossbow should 1 hit kill in the head you would think? No they SURVIVE a single shot from the extremely powerful '1 shot 1 kill' weapons but die from a single pistol bullet! Its a little stupid to say the least.

What Debug Mod?

You are aware they were both the preorder items right? ><

The rest of it I would avoid as I tend to find that once you start cheating in such silly ways you wind up getting bored of the game very quickly...

Disable intro (this stops all the logos loading, you just see a quick wall of text, and then straight to the main menu).

...but this won me over in an instant.

They are DLC for getting the preorder

I have the Silenced Sniper, Double Barrelled Shotgun, explosive charges and autohacking devices as well as Tongs rescue!

Well now you don't need to pre-order (or pirate, naughty naughty) to get any of those things. You can also do Tong's Rescue as you can force missions.

Yeah that annoyed me. Why does Icarus (a massive energy burst) require no energy, but punching a guy in the face does. Makes no sense.

Thing is though I could live with it if you could regenerate all your bars. 1 bar for Takedowns, 1/2 bar for Icarus (1 bar if you stun on impact). Its annoying when you eventually wind up with only a single bar left (because even if you don't do takedowns you might punch through the odd wall) which limits your augs severely unless you start eating your way through every energy bar you've found which really doesn't go that far if you want to actually make use of your augs.
