Depends what GPU you're running. My 5850 @950/1200 is fine at 2560x1440 with everything but AA maxed out. Knock the AA down a notch from your current settings at 1080p and you're ready to go in most situations. Even Shogun 2 which is supposed to be this crazy VRAM hog runs perfectly. I say try it out first and then decide if you need a new GPU as well
