So I am moving to Canada, good thing do happen sometimes :D Any advice from other expats?

Sounds fantastic Jegz and funnily enough, I too work in a Highways environment *sigh* so i can appreciate the want to get out. I have a similar background to you BEng (Hons) civil engineering design + MSc Civil engineering. I would be interested to hear a bit more about your move etc if you have the time. Email in trust. Good luck :)

No worries mate!

If you send me an email I will put it to follow up and wont forget. Think my trust should work. Alternatively add my msn id.

My wife is a highways engineer and getting fed up with the state of UK engineering.

We're considering a move abroad - probably to Canada.

Good luck and let us know how you get on :)

Poutine is actually amazing. Get a season ticket at your closest mountain. Think of the alps, now divide the people by 3 and you have your average Canadian mountain. Also find a Hockey team to support. :)

Yeah the highways industry in this country is basically all conjecture in the form of transport planning and engineers trying to polish turds by reworking our inferior highway system.

Abroad is the only place to actually get to build roads unless you are fortunate enough to get involved in one of the few schems going on here.

If you looking to go to Canada, now is the time! They tell me its just about to boom again and they are aggressively recruiting.

I will keep updating this thread as things unfold :D

Worked on an outside bbq/griddle thing last summer for a while in Whistler, poutine with a proper bratwurst sausage or chili is the most amazing thing in the entire world... dribble

For every british family moving from the UK to another country.

500 families from poland, pakistan and across asia flood into the UK.

We will sink soon. Worlds biggest Titanic.

All in all OP, congrats, enjoy, and when you get there, loads of pictures :) oh and, enjoy the winter when it arrives, more snow there than will ever arrive in england :)

True

Congrats! My mum taught out there for a short while on an exchange and loved every minute.

Personally I'd love to move to New Zealand one day.

I moved to Canada (Vancouver) with my wife a few years back. We found out my wife was pregnant 2 days b4 we left.
I loved it out there. The best country I have ever been to (I have visited a lot) I had a job that was fantastic and I enjoyed going to work every day.
Just less than a year of being there my wife went back to the UK (missed her mummy)and of course our 4 month old son.
I found out that a huge amount of people return from livin abroad because of the other female half.
If it wasn't for my son I would have given her 'up yours I am staying' (I followed her back to this poo poo country 2 months later)

Be prepared to come back to the UK when your misses says she has had enough

Hopefully it wont come to that gary!

We are bloody skint here so we would be coming back at the cost of a lifestyle. I am almost 100% confident we will not be coming back as we hardly see our families anyway.

Right guys! So I am here now :O!

It is very, very different to the uk. You have to drive EVERYWHERE. Because all the settlements are on prairie <sp> land the city is mega spread out (think the size of london but with only 1m people)

I am enjoying it so far to a certain extent as its all different and I am wroking for a company that seem to be excited to have me working for them and want me to excel which is more than I can say for the horrible company I worked for in the UK. (Who's loss is that? You dont employ a crap employee and pay for them to move half way around the world)

Everyone is sooo friendly here and the economy is on the up so spirits are high :D! I cant be arsed to write reams this evening as I am half cut lol. I will keep updated though. Please if you have any questions about canada dont hesitate to ask.

Heres some links to pics I have taken so far

The vastness of the country really doesnt hit you till you end up on a road that is straight for literally hundreds of kilometers its very strange!
