HSBC sercure key fob

That's not big at all, I hope they implement it for First Direct customers!

Security is more important!

The keyfob is terrible, as are all keyfobs in general. I'm glad I've changed to Lloyds who seem one of the few banks who don't use one of these ridiculous things.

Quite frankly if someone can hack my account by bypassing my username, password and a second password entered only by individual letters then they deserve all the money I have.

These stupid fobs are to protect the <1% of people who are idiotic enough to enter their full bank details into fake sites, and should definitely be optional.

Edit: And for the people saying I should just carry it around, I have 5 different bank accounts, 3 of which have card readers/fobs/other useless things. Carrying them all with me everywhere I go would be ridiculous.

but with natwest you only need the calculator thing to setup payments, you dont need it to login ever!

yea but you dont need the natwest one everytime you want to login.....

My point being, which I could have made clearer, is that its so small you can carry it around with you hassle free. If you're going on holiday, just pack it in your luggage. It's hardly going to take up any extra room.

People soon complain when something does go wrong and its 'not their fault' and that they should have their money returned to their account because they accidently on purpose gave their log in details to a very nice Nigerian chap on the phone who 'works' for them but now doesn't and they don't have insurance on their account to cover such issues. The bank is taking steps to ensure things go wrong less often and all people do is whine.

I've just changed my bank from Santander to Natwest and just orderd my secure Calc thingy.... Not seen how big it is but looking at that pic it's huge...LOL

Just to note with Natwest you only need the secure Calcs if your adding & removing direct debts, standing orders and if it's a new contact that's not already in your list, you can simply log in to the online banking using your passwords and a couple of other security questions check ya balance and things without the calc.

Like I said still waiting for mine to turn up so it's smaller then I will post a Pic.

Yep just got my NATWEST one and it's the same as in the pic, it's huge so not mobile but only need it to setup new payee's and new payments so as long as you set them all up you can send payments from anywhere.

I received mine a couple of weeks ago, and didn't think the fuss would bother me. Turns out it driven me potty, being out and about wanting to check my account quickly, or having to fetch my wallet every time I want to log on is quickly becoming stale.

Time to swap over, and it seems The Co-Op are coming out on top.

How does the secure key work? You type in your PIN and up pops a another PIN, how did the bank know that was the PIN you would get? Would doing it a second time without using the first generated PIN mess up the sequence?

It's called two factor authentication. Look here

Thanks for the link. Thing that gets me is that I chose my own PIN, the bank doesn't know it, how on earth can they verify I have put my correct secret PIN in my end just from the generated outcome they see????

Your card verifies you entered the correct pin.

I'm willing to bet without the correct pin, the device does bugger all except ask for your pin again.

It's ****, thankfully more or less left hsbc.
Who wants to carry that about to gain acess.

Much prefer Co-ops card reader. Dont need it to log on and only need it the first time you transfer money to a new account. Once you've done it once, you don't need it again for future transactions to that account.

I don't understand the fuss, its not like this a new thing, other banks have used similar systems for ages. I never saw a fuss when they introduced there card-readers and fobs and what have you.

My Natwest system works very nicely, I can log on and view my account etc without but when I want to stop moving money or changing passwords, thats when I need the card-reader for extra security. I'm more happy than annoyed.

The only time I'm gonna need my card-reader is when I'm using online banking on my laptop. My laptop is a lot more bulky than the card-reader...

How about when you go on extended Holliday is that something you really want to carry around with you. I didn't even take my keys on Holliday. Why would you.

Many banks have them, but they are all implemented differently.
As I said co-op only requires it to set up new bank transfers. Which means you can still use Internet banking when away and If you know you are going to need to transfer money just set up a transfer before you go. Then you can do as many transfers as you wont after that with no fob.

I hope first direct do not choose to go down this annoying route. Hopefully they will figure that the people this is mostly designed to protect probably don't bank with them.

Its not something you want to carry around with you?

Do you use a public computer? Surely you have to carry a laptop aswell so it isn't much more.
