Driving Instructor Ramble.

I find it quite disturbing how long it takes the average driver.

Why do you find it disturbing?
Many people are simply NOT natural drivers and some can take two or three times more lessons to reach the required pass standard than even the average driver.
You may have found it easy to learn to drive but not everyone is like that unfortunately.

Difficult situation really if you've paid up front. At a guess I'd say it'd be a lot of work trying to get the money back out of him if you cancel the remaining lessons.

If you're stuck with him then the next time he says something that upsets you, I'd probably kick off. Let the red mist in a bit and have a massive counter-rant as to what you think of his driving tuition. People like that often back down when properly confronted but I accept no responsibility if it comes to blows :).

Your driving instructor IS an idiot. No instructor should
a. shout like that if they want you to learn
b. forget dual controls like that!
c. forget the "point of no return" as my instructor put it, so there's always a point when you are coming up to lights where you know you can't stop for them.
and d. he won't get points! He's a driving, instructor he's payed to have someone mess about in his car to make these mistakes!

Get rid of him stat! Your driving instructor shouldn't be your friend but also shouldn't be such an idiot! They should be more like a professional teacher of sorts (so paying a bit more tends to pay off)

Oh and for the off topic theme iv had 27 hours to be test ready and iv only learnt in the last 5 months (I'm 22 and did the same thing and waiting till after uni and failed last monday for nerves opposed to not being able to drive)

Some people are upset by being told the truth no matter how polite the instructor.
I once had a girl stop gong with me because I stopped her with the dual controls from pulling out into the path of a lorry which was hurtling through a huge roundabout and only about 25 metres away. It was clearly a case of her being killed and probably me too if I'd allowed her to proceed.

However, even after I'd taken her around the same roundabout several times and proved mathematically beyond doubt that it was impossible for her to have go out without causing an accident, she still decided to go elsewhere. It didn't bother me as I'd rather not teach that sort of person and the same girl went with just about every other instructor in the area because of her I know best attitude.

I'd like a pound for every time I've heard the classic phrase " I could have got out there" - I wouldn't be sat here typing on a rare day off...I'd be sat in some sunny location enjoying a well earned break!

Just look at him next time and start drooling. Or take his thing to heart and next time you're in the situation do an emergency stop and get his car wrecked as someone plows into the back of you.

Amber lights are fine, as long as you're not flooring it to "make" the amber.

I would have done the same thing :)

If you can't stop safely and still going 30mph then carry on.

Get a new instructor , might find one cheaper too.

When I was 17 and learning a car pulled out in front of us at the last second, both the instructor and I hit the brakes at the time. Obviously with only a split second to react I didnt know he had hit the brakes and it resulted in us doing an emergency stop.

He started screaming about how I shouldnt have touched the brakes when he did, even though we had no time to react. At the time I kept having lessons with him, looking back now he was supposed to be teaching me to drive and I should have got a new teacher and so should you.

So thats why you like the idea of people taking many many hours of lessons :p

Actually, I have the busiest book in the area and have always done so simply because I don't waste the student's time and cut out all the crud and get on with the job of positively training them in the shortest possible time - the sooner I can get "rid" of the student by getting them taught to drive, the sooner I can take on another student to replace them. Notice I say taught to drive rather than just teaching them to pass a test. I find no benefit in a student taking longer than is required to teach them but a number of students will undoubtedly take longer than the average driver to train - it's all down to aptitude and also attitude too!

90% of my work comes through other students both past and present and Im now teaching many kids of students that I taught 20-30 years ago so I must be doing something right given the level of competition there is these days.:)

Worst I had to encounter was driving on the A3 for my first time, hurtling along there was a car wheel arch in the middle of the road, I left it quite late to lane change but he kept reasonably calm.

He didn't shout at me or anything really, he did look a little flushed though.

Where was the junction. Very, very few have cameras on. The things on top of the lights aren't cameras.
I can recommend a very good instructor in Glasgow if you want.

I think its inflated more by bad driving instructors with gimmicks to get people on the books, Common sense seems to go out of the window when it comes to choosing an instructor

You have the teens that want lessons in the latest cool hot hatch regardless of the skill of the instructor and the bargain hunters that don't stop to think there must be a reason the lessons are so cheap

Then add to that the naive people who just believe anything there bad instructor tells them and end up doing way more lessons than they actually needed

I find a lot of people seem to change instructors,

I changed mine after 4 lessons. Got talking to him and he then told me he had just become an instructor and proceeded to shout at me for things I'd apparently been told about before. must have been mixing me up or something as I'd barely started to learn.

Changed instructor and he was much much better, My sister then learnt with him, passing first time.

As for how long it takes some people to learn to drive. I had quite a few hours but then I did mess about getting my theory sorted and that seemed to drag on him telling me to book it and my actually booking it, So by the end I was more than ready for my test.

Don't be afraid to change instructor if you aren't getting on with the current, You will find things flow much better when you have a instructor you get on with.

You're paying him to teach you, not lecture you. He's perfectly capable of using the dual control brakes if he thought there was a problem.

Take your business elsewhere, sound more like he wasnt paying attention. Its not like theres a shortage of driving instructors about!. :D

Well he's wrong to start. In a Driving Lesson if you get caught speeding or what's happened in your case, the points get put on to your license when you pass. And that Instructor is an idiot. How is that meant to build confidence.

Looking back the first driving instructor I had was pretty bad ... the one thing that sticks in my mind though was sitting at a junction waiting for the lights to change (with nothing behind me), the lights go green and he started shouting at me as I made no attempt to pull off ... less than 20 seconds later two fire engines, all flashing lights zoom through the junction ... that's why I hadn't pulled out ...

Whilst you can argue rights of way etc if there are a couple of emergency vehicles rapidly approaching obviously on their way somewhere in a hurry, and I can safely stay out of their way, then I'm going to do so ...

The guy really was an arrogant **** though and I was glad when I moved to another instructor who was a lot better teacher.

Totally agree, I think I had 14 lessons with no additional driving when I passed my test (2nd time).

All the best drivers pass second time you know :p
