Please place the item in the bagging area.

It's quite simple, the system knows the weight of everything so when you place stuff on the plate that is slightly off-weight it thinks there's something wrong. The answer is to weigh everything through as onions. I've found my shopping is a lot cheaper this way too :)

I actually tried this with some toothpaste... Just to see if it worked...

Nothing... 'Come on!!!'... Still nothing...

Shop assistant came over... "Sir, that is not an plum", "how did you know I am trying to scan a plum?" "You need an assistant to authorise self weighed fruit".

DAMN!

Oh well :(

I call it the self service challenge, see what you can get for free!
Installing self service into the supermarket has been the biggest money saving promotion they have done for me!
:p

Those machine infuriate me. "Place item in bagging area" *OK...done* "Invalid item in bagging area, please remove this item" arghhh.

Annoys me, why would you need a bag if youre only using the self checkout?

I think people buy 1 or 2 things not their weekly shop with them so why does anyone need a bag. Should be scan item, put money in, collect optional bag, **** off.

The funny thing is, most of the supermarkets use exactly the same system. I know Tesco, M&S and Asda have the exact same system just rebranded. Equally, I think Morrisons use a differeny companies system. I've heard far more problems with Morrison's from a friend who works there than I've experienced with the Tesco ones where I'm being trained.

If its quiet, self serve is generally much faster as there isn't usually a queue. But if you have alcohol/age restricted items then depending on how busy it is, you may be faster going through regular tills, depends if the person watching the self serve is paying attention or not.

That said, you do get some real idiots. Had a customer on saturday who was just buying a newspaper. Scanned it then just folded it up under his arm, the checkout kept telling him to put it in the bagging area, so he stormed off to one of the basket tills complaining about how it wasn't letting him pay.

NCR in Tesco etc. and Wincor Nixdorf in like B&Q

the ones is asda have the volume turned up ridiculously loud

She is an extreamly loud mouthed woman! She is also very moany...must get a lot of old folk.

Don't know if it's user error or the machines in your area are not calibrated properly but I use the self scan in Shenfield Tesco-Express pretty much on a daily basis and NEVER have a problem!! (Other than needing booze authorized)

Guys you can mute these things! - I can at my local Sainsburys...always the first thing I do

Load more than one mushroom at a time and this is the result...

makes a carp remix!

Bill Bailey :D brilliant

I was self serving like a boss the other day, just scanned my clubcard and was getting my wallet out to pay, when some old duffer started scanning her stuff and trying to put it in my bag

Oi bugger off Doris, the nice lady at the empty express till will take your old people groceries, this till is for pros.

Haha, love it!

Seriously though, off all the supermarket self service checkouts, Morrsions is by far the worst, no exaggeration, 8 out of 10 times i use it, i need a checkout assistant to sort the machine out when it says wrong weight, well i never weighed the bloody bottle of pepsi out did i? They need to put a little tolerance either way imo. That supervisor in morrisons is always at a self service kiosk.

The worst thing is the Tesco by my place is 90 percent non English speaking so you end up there for hours while some docile muppet is struggling to follow instructions and then the 1 staff member for all 6 self service tills is too busy talking to his 'bro's' to come over and help! Usually if i just have a small basket of goods im boss at self service and if an item for some reason does not want to scan i either leave or borrow it! Aint waiting around!
