Please place the item in the bagging area.

I dont use them, I am quite happy to wait at a manned till.

I believe they are divisive and are only there to reduce staff numbers, and nothing else.

Of course they are, they are trying to save costs on labour. I have never really had a problem with one and one bonus is they are usually free as everybody else wants to go to a manned till.

Nd speed up quing time, you can fit so many more in the same area.

Im glad som e poeple dislike them, means we can get tehough even quicker.

Queing and tills is one of the big complaints about supermarkets, which is why theyve tried self scanning and all sorts.

I'm very much in the "I don't get what peoples problem is" camp... the ones in our local Sainsburys have always been perfectly fine for me... Occasional annoyance but far from un-usable

There have been several occasions where I've left with free stuff too... I'll be scanning 2 of the same product one after another, and the first item's weight doesn't quite register properly, setting off the warning message... When the member of staff comes over to fix the problem they're usually stretched so thin looking after all the tills they just scan their little card as quickly as possible, see that I'm holding the item the till is complaining about, and override it so I can put it in the bag... But the item in my hands is the 2nd one of 2 and the first one is already in the bag - oh well :D

I have to admit, I dont go to supermarkets often enough for the speed of it to be an issue, the weekly shop gets dropped off by asda direct and the only time I need to go in one is if im out and about and need the odd thing or two.

So time isnt an issue, I can spare the two minutes to keep someone in a job.

Which does sound hypocritical seeing as I have the shopping delivered, but its still had to be picked and driven to the house, so i am keeping even more people in work!

Huzzah!

My very local Morrisons has 4 utterly brain dead self service check outs and they are also far, far too small. They do wind me up something chronic.

Tesco's versions are actually pretty reliable. I'm quite pro with those. :D

Self service checkouts = Serious business.

?

Move to another machine? Obviously given your rage you managed to destroy the machine so that no other unfortunate souls less stable than you didn't go on a rampage in the store. Safety first!

People with your own bags struggling with authentication...I think that the scales zero when you press start (to account for the varying number of bags) so you can put your rucksack on at the beginning, then press start, and then you won't have to authenticate the bag.

Perhaps it's meant to work like that, but it doesn't seem to do so. It's probably quicker to scan and pack seperately. If you've only bought enough to fit in a rucksack, it shouldn't take long to pack it.

I'd rather wait for a regular till, but have no problem using the self-service.

Not really sure theft is a thing you should be bragging about. Do you think it's OK because they made a mistake and you didn't tell them?

No but having just waited several minutes to eventually get the attention of the member of staff to come and fix the machine in the first place and the general feeling of contempt towards any customers that require help didn't exactly make me want to waste yet more time and hassle for the sake of saving them the 50p or whatever the mistake let through  I guess that doesn't make it OK but it hardly makes me a criminal mastermind setting out to game the self-service system does it? It also wasn't my intention to "brag" but just to highlight that their self-service system with over-stretched staff members leads to these sort of mistakes

Public LOL at some of the posts in this thread.

I detest self service machines with a passion, the amount of time and effort it takes for people to faff around on these, someone couldve scanned, packed my bags and taken payment with a friendly smile.

Bloody aggressive boot on that machine, they couldve made the voice a bit more pleasant :p

Something I've noticed recently is that self service tills won't always knock off the multibuy savings when you tap pay.

You have to go back and then the discounts will suddenly appear!

I'm on to you supermarkets!

There is a small area above your shopping stating the amount of "multibuy savings" throughout your shopping.

Counterintuitive to have it there but hey. The only thing worse than using the machines is having to work on them for a 8+ hour day :X
