Read a few pages back, you need to set your join settings to none-single player.
While on the subject, anyone modding make sure to disable VAC.

Steam Support says you won't be VAC banned if you mod Dead Island
I did. I still need to be connected to Steam ONLINE or else it won't connect. Using steam in offline mode brings up an error.
You wont be VAC banned if you don't play with other VAC players, mod then play with players with VAC enabled and you could get a suspension.
Just what I picked up from the DI Mods page on the steam forums.
@Freeman, sorry I miss-read your post, missed the part about steam being offline, in which case I'm not sure, have a google about or look on the steam forums, it should be possible as you can play the game totally SP.

I've managed to pick up a magnum that when equipped or dropped completely crashes the game to desktop

Totally agree with that. I was hugely let down. AMAZING trailer.... poor game.
Was just in a game with a couple of lads, real good fun doing some missions - got to the church and they were throwing down all these bats....
Level 1 Homerun bats and flogging them for 3k a piece to the trade man
- must have made about 100k each...

Only thing that sucks with these graphics tweaks is that one could get banned with VAC on, not likely but really isn't worth the chance. Only played the game with one buddy so far since he turns VAC off.

Have stopped playing this. Was enjoying it and the city is very cool, but I died twice in a row because of the stupid sticky key bug. Will wait for a patch.

is there a way of adding randomers as friends 'in game'? I dropped connection and couldn't find the people I was playing with for ages.

Steam Tweeted pretty much saying VAC will not ban you for modifying DI.
