Yeah lol

Cell was certainly overhyped when it came to be known. No doubt it is still a powerful processor when applications are specifically coded for it as it is best in number crunching tasks and can beat majority of desktop cpus in floating point calculations in single-precision.

I was reading that for [email protected], it's single-precision performance is around 200GFlops. However it takes a performance hit in double-precision and can only churn out around 18GFlops.

Now say take 6990 which is capable of 5.10 TFlops in single-precision (stock speed)

If we compare cell with 6990 in that regard, then 6990 is 25 times more powerful than cell in floating point calculations. Ofcourse there will be other factors to take into account such as architecture, etc.

Yeah, I mean when the PS3 came out it was like "Wow, that thing is pretty darn powerful" (for a console). It was effcient, and cost effective. It was also very good at number crunching as you say, as proven by the Folding@Home saga on PS3. Though when it was labled "A Supercomputer", that was a joke. It was nothing of the sort, and it was also very quickly outperformed by desktop CPUs. When I hear game developers banging on about the "power of Cell", honestly, it's a load of marketing BS to make people think their PS3 is "still" very powerful, when it really isn't.

Really, the same can be said for the Xbox 360's CPU, though Microsoft didn't boast about it too much (thank goodness). At the time, a tripple core CPU @ 3.2GHz in a console was like Wow! Now however, a tripple core means nothing, it's architecture is outdated and I have no doubt a newer single core would out-perform it.

You don't need a very powerful PC to run most modern games at 30fps ( or less!) at 720p/sub 720p at the settings the consoles run them at......

Not really, the ps3 gpu was a 7 series with its nuts cut off and the 360 gpu was a modified version of a radeon gpu.

Yes, what I mean is that it was faster because there was no need for an API. Even with it's "nuts cut off", it was probably more powerful than 2, 7 series cards.

Why doesnt someone make a console that has a GTX580 with keyboard and mouse? I would definately console game then (but then it wouldnt really be a 'console' would it?!)

No it would still be a console, because console gamers choose the console specifically because they don't have to upgrade to play another game and fiddle with settings, it's all pre-done.

True, although consoles use a clever technique of "capping" the FPS at 30, basically applying Vsync so it looks a lot smoother than a PC running a game at 30 FPS. Trust me, play a game on your PC and lock the FPS at 30 and you will feel sick, now play a game on a console and it isn't the same. It feels more like 40-45FPS on a console. Then, apply Vsync at 30 FPS on your PC and you get the same kind of experience, though it still isn't as smooth as a console.

Depends on the game, some games run like **** at 30fps.

yes but almost all games run like **** and at 30fps on the consoles ;)

I honestly can't bare playing games on my ps3 much these days. The loading times, the fuzzy graphics, the awful framerates... yuck. * sits on high horse*

The api overhead isnt as much as people think, even carmack has stated it wasn't as heavy as it once was. Theres no way a castrated 7 series would have beaten a full fat 7800gtx.

Read what you will, a game like Killzone 3/Uncharted 3 would look/run like crap if it were on a PC and ran on a 7800GTX. Even running at <720p and 30FPS, if it were on a PC it would be horrendous.

EDIT: You also state "once was", well we are talking 5-6 year old machines here ;).

I agree with VortX

Btw nice watercooling build lol:cool::D

The only way console devs can get away with lower requirements is its a fixed spec on consoles. Theres no witchcraft or wizardry being worked, if a pc dev wanted to create a game with a fixed set of requiremnets they would probably be able to achieve the same results.

It isn't the API that's the limiting factor of Killzone 3 on a pc at 720p 30FPS though. Don't forget you'd need a tri-core+ CPU too to be comparable too, if they made a game specifically for a 7800 and that alone then it would look a lot better, it just wouldn't make any money.

Ok, I'm getting caught up in all the BF3 hype now. Pre-ordered on Origin and have convinced some friends and co-workers to take the plunge after I showed them the Youtube videos.

Cousins buying a new PC. I was tempted, but common sense prevailed. Looking at my spec in the sig below, a new fx card should be fine for BF3 on eye candy setting? GTX 580?

You're entirely right. In regards to API/making a game on a console I was also talking about specific specs that you mention. I mean, after all, the main reason we need an API is because every computer is unique. I just didn't word myself correctly, but yes I agree :).

This is 1 long thread...... For time saving could anyone tell me if its confirmed the BETA will be out the 28th of this month if you know?

Cheers

Soon

If for some reason i can't make the 48 hour early beta,i could be working away,i shall pass over my key to some lucky chap who isn't a console peasant:p

I guess fixed hardware does have it's own benefits in that a console dev can work with an easy peace of mind, utilising all the resources available and hence optimising a console game to look as good as the PC version on 720p res.

The most likely date is 27th although the BETA has recently been certified on ALL 3 platforms so it could be as early as next week.
