I guess fixed hardware does have it's own benefits in that a console dev can work with an easy peace of mind, utilising all the resources available and hence optimising a console game to look as good as the PC version on 720p res.

Its benefits are pretty short lived though as its dated from the minute the spec is finalised.

These consoles were hyped as being "HD" Consoles yet theres a hell of a lot of Games running at sub HD resolutions. 360 was Hyped as having Free AA for all Games, but the games had to be coded in a specifc way to get the benefit of that.

I was tempted, but common sense prevailed. Looking at my spec in the sig below, a new fx card should be fine for BF3 on eye candy setting? GTX 580?

580 would be my choice, Dice have been quoted as saying that the fault line trailers were running on a single 580 and they looked amazing and ran smooth. Multi-player will be a another ball game but I'm confident a 580 will max it out with a playable frame rate.

Yup this game is gonna be a classic example of Sub HD on consoles.

Running at 1280x704 res on consoles

Ok, I'm getting caught up in all the BF3 hype now. Pre-ordered on Origin and have convinced some friends and co-workers to take the plunge after I showed them the Youtube videos.

Cousins buying a new PC. I was tempted, but common sense prevailed. Looking at my spec in the sig below, a new fx card should be fine for BF3 on eye candy setting? GTX 580?

The multiplayer demos that they ran at Gamescon etc all ran on SLi 580's with all the eye candy, so I suspect a single 580 will play it very nice, maybe not max but depends on your monitor resolution.

Alpha finished on 1st August

Caspian border trailer was shown on 16th August

Now DICE has confirmed they made 100s of changes from Alpha.

So is it likely that caspian border map we play in beta will differ from the one shown in trailer to some extent gameplay wise?

There is a dev video where the dev says you need SLI 580's to max the game out ( presumably at 1080p and with decent amounts of AA e.t.c)

Games are made differently too. I mean Halo Reach runs at 720p and some of the objects and guns are incredibly sharp and detailed yet other things are running at very low resolutions.

Larger scale doesn't automatically mean better gameplay. Even 64 players in BF2 quite a few maps felt very empty and the battlefield experience was reduced to multiple smaller sized skirmishes spread over the map. You can only increase player count and extend maps so much before it feels like being a chore just to get into a Battle. .

This is the challenge for the dev's to make maps as interesting as possible regardless of their size. I'd rather play on a good big map than a good small map though :]

Just because you say so?.

It's just my opinion at this moment in time. Some people think just because DICE have said the PC is the lead format, they assume it's going to be a great game.

The last PC BF game to ship with the commo rose was back in 2006, the whole point of it was to make communication faster. Call me crazy but im pretty sure it would be obvious that Dice would be experimenting with other systems since that point. Its not like commo rose is the defining feature that makes or breaks a BF game, BF1942 and BF Vietnam managed just fine without it.

I don't think the first bad company game on the consoles had the como rose then look at bad company 2. The spotting in that was terrible without the como rose.

Theres always a chance that the game may not turn out how it was expected, That being said though for the main BF series DICE have always delivered a Good Quality Game. This is the first time the Consoles have got the main series on their systems, so DICE are making it for PC and downscaling it for Consoles. That way we don't get any Console optomised BS and they get the best of what their machines are capable of.

The spotting in BC2 wasn't bad, it was more the other audio that most people complained about, having to look at an assault guy and shout for Ammo and looking at a medic to request aid wasn't the most intuative thing in the world. THey probably could have come up with a more refined system but most people just wanted the commo rose back.

I hope so. Either way, it's going to look excellent

I played BC2 today (the first time since playing the BF3 Alpha) and I finally understand what people mean by mouse lag, I honestly never noticed it before, I thought the mouse was broken at first.

Once you've played BF3 you miss prone + sprint strafe on BC2 so much.

Basically that comparison shows DX9 vs DX11 what with dynamic lighting and volumetric smoke effects which are no where to be found on the Xbox 360.

I'm pretty sure that guy wasn't a dev but an NVIDIA rep? Or if he was a dev he was sucking up to NVIDIA like nobodys business.

Do you have to pre-orser this game to be able to play the beta? I planned on doing a super market run a midnight on launch day providing they actually sell pc games :)

Only to get the BETA 48 hours early, after those 48 hours it will be an Open BETA, for everyone.
