I don't know if this is due to the current economic climate but I'm having a pretty rubbish time ever since I finished my degree.

I graduated with a First class in Physics and Computer Science and I've been unemployed since.

How do I do it? I've been applying to all these jobs on websites like brightrecruits and the graduate recruitment bureau and I either don't get a response or I get denied.

My CV isn't even bad. I'm worried this is all because I got a C in Physics at A level.

I'm starting to think I should just work at Morrisons for a year and then go do a masters.

Anyone got any advice? Stories to tell? Cool story bro?

I graduated last year.

Started applying for jobs in July, and until December I had only 1 interview :(

But in January I had 5! Received an offer for a job and started in February.

Definitely get a part time job, but just keep on trying and eventually something will come up! :)

Use ALL the jobs sites, Reed, TotalJobs, Michael Page, etc.

My girlfriend is currently having a torrid time finding a job too. She's moved over here from Sweden, so it's not exactly the same situation you're in.

Still, it's heart breaking when you're trying all you can and there is no feedback or response.

If you're really stuck, are there some places that you can do a little volunteer work? You didn't mention it, but I'll assume that you're itching to get out and do something :p

Ask around friends / extended family for any possible vacancies at their jobs. Best of luck, just stay positive and things have a way of working out in the end! :)

A friend of mine works in IT and one of his colleagues has I think the same degree as you and the same grade from a very good uni and couldnt get a job, he applied for an entry level IT job just to get some money in, he got an interview straight away. They were so impressed with his interview and skills that when they offered him the job it was a different to what they were recruiting for and actually in a development section which was a lot more money. Not saying it always works that way but worth a shot :D

all brains, no common sense? or no industry experience??

i am being serious, i'm sure your an intelligent human being - have you worked before? part time jobs at uni? work experience etc? employees want clever people yes, but they also want people that have a bit of history behind them too.

and why would you do a masters? what bc you cant find a job now? and you really think that will help?? it will just create even less opportunities for you at your age.

stop believing the uni tag lines, and start assessing the real world, only then will you really progress.

Well, the masters thing is so I can do a PhD. That's what I wanted to do in the first place but it's hard to do a PhD without a masters. I had 2 PhD interviews and didn't get them so that's where I'm at now.

Thanks, I'll take a look at these now.

Appreciating the responses guys.

A lot of the physicists in our year who did a BSc seemed to end up in some sort of finance related job. There seems to be plenty of jobs in that sector, especially in accountancy. Maybe it's not as rosy as I think though, I'm doing an MPhys so I've not looked at jobs yet.

I've gotta look for graduate jobs now I think.

Graduated 2yrs ago though but spent a year trying for jobs then decided I Wanted to do medicine so spent a year aiming for that only to miss exam grade by few points. Then decided I don't want to do it any more (long hours horrible lifestyle etc etc)

Does it make a difference how "Late" you start applying for graduate jobs? feel like i've mucked around a bit too much and it may look bad.

what uni did you do this at? is it a good one?

really doubt the c in physics is holding you back esp as you got a 1st unless, you are looking at grad programmes that block entry unless you achieve a minimum UCAS score, heck even people with PhDs can't get through those min scores. ironically you can still work for those companies once you have got some work experience and don't have to apply through the grad programmes. they simply work on the fact that to filter they need to set thresholds and there will be sufficient applicants with a PhD, Masters, 1st etc who did get the UCAS points so there are no need to make exceptions.

tough job market at the moment, you will probably need to relocate for the better jobs.

I know someone who came out of uni at the same time as me (just over 2 years ago) and recently (through facebook) found out he's still on benefits! Hasn't had a single job since leaving uni.

Made me smile... I hated the guy... he hated me too... but then he had a reason, I slept with his gf... oops

OOOfff thats just laziness tbh.

What was his degree?

Physics with Astronomy, from a respectable red-brick (for Astronomy and Engineering, at least...)

He was a bit up-his-own-ass (more so than me), so is probably only going for decent, well-paying jobs straight away.

You generally have to start up in a crummy thing (or a graduate dev course, which could be considered the same, I suppose) if you have no real work experience... I have quite a bit, for my age, but still had to take a job on £7.50/hour (contractor!) for ~14 months before I could find a real job.

I had an horrific ~6 weeks on benefits... that wasn't fun... can't imagine 2 years, especially compared to what I'm earning now!
