After a "hot" hatch...

If you want good fuel economy, get a diesel.
If you want a fast car, get a fast diesel.

You can easily get a 123d in your budget. Sure, it's a pre-facelift, but it'll be faster than Golf.

Faster than which Golf?

Plenty of "hot" hatches can return decent MPG if driven properly whilst putting a huge grin on your face when the road gets twisty.

In fact last week my car returned 45mpg yet will happily pull ahead of a 123d if pushed (using any performance metric - S Tronic is fun)

Either way, if the OP wants a diesel then that's one of the best options.
If he doesn't want a diesel then he needs a 130i ;)

Hi, quoting BHP is pub talk as it is all about torque, as mentioned before. Get a diesel have it remapped and don't believe anyone who says diesels are all black smoke and noise...
Chris

I had a Giulietta 170 JTDm for a test drive and it was an absolute hoot to drive. Not all that noisy either, esp when cruising.

I drove it like a hooligan and returned around 33mpg - on a 70mph cruise it was 49 mpg on the live readout.

Possibly out of budget still though?

The DS3 THP is closer to 160bhp than 150 as standard, i've had mine mapped with custom intake and am pushing 211bhp~235lb/ft which is more than the DS3 Racing. The mpg is way way better than quoted, anything from 30 (plenty of leptons) to over 50mpg on motorway duty...

Plus, it looks stunning

Thats quite impressive :)

Regarding the OP's question. How about a MK5 Golf GTI? Ticks every box in your criteria apart from the 45mpg. However even with the DSG box it's a pretty frugal car when driven sedately. However, you have specified a hot hatch so that shouldn't be a massive issue surely? Anything over 30mpg is a plus.

Spoken like a true diesel owner with the need to self justify. Diesel has it's uses no question, but not today in a hot hatch, not in my humble opinion.

Golf GTi is a great all rounder and though the turbo does take some of the fun away and the steering is a bit numb it is a fantastically accomplished all rounder and will bladder around twisty roads with aplomb. Clio Cup is a cracking thing too, one of those two I suspect is where I would end up if in your position but you won't get 45mph unless you consider diesel and then that would make you a self justifier like our Chris here. :D

This is totally true, bhp means nothing. My old 1.9TD Xantia had the same torque output and similar weight to a Civic Type R so in the real world it was just as fast.

Absolutly true... both a Pre 04 Porsche Boxster S and Fabia VRS have 310nm (229ft lb) of torque so they are equal in all areas. :)
