Classic Impreza Turbo

Yeah seen em at 2.5k on fleabay

Thanks for the advice, will get it in to be looked at asap.

I was brutal with my haggling, and it is amazing what impact saying "I want my holding deposit back as it isn't like you described" has on a trader :)

I think the price was fair considering, clutch is tired, seat bolster is shot (zip off leather cover so that wont take much to fix) gearbox whiney and on last legs I expect and a few other insignificant cosmetic issues.

I think the price was fair

As long as your happy ;) Thats all that matters. :D :D

I've considered when buying a classic if I were going to mod it properly to how I want it - brakes, engine, suspension, interior etc etc. Then as long as the engine and shell is in good nick whats the point paying more for the car as most of the bits are going to upgraded.

I usually get to about £6K LOL in parts and think I'll be better off just getting a newage STI. Bugeye STIs are really good value right now.

Sorry, but from your description it sounds like its knackered :o worn out clutch? gearbox issues? if these need replacing you would defo have being able to buy a newer one without these issues when you add up all the costs, not to mention the time and hassle it will take to sort these "niggles" out.

I did think that myself but a pointless post as he's already bought it.
It can all be fixed and sounds like he has the funds and energy to do so.

Clutch is £400 and isn't gone yet, mostly labour, if the gearbox is being swapped that labour cost is shared.

I will easily cover it in the amount I saved, but thanks for your opinion.

OFC buying a newer car guarantees clutch and other parts will be fine... oh wait...

Ok I wont bother commenting any further, but I would have walked away from an Impreza with gearbox and clutch issues personally, however much it cost you, you are talking at least a grand in reapirs there and you havent even got it yet :/ good luck with it anyway it looks tidy enough in the pics:)

Yeah, I said I was gonna walk away until he slashed the price, I had researched the costs of replacing certain parts before.

Clutches and cambelts are consumables £400 and £200 respectively, they are part of the running costs. I got £750 off the purchase price, which should cover the box/clutch and the fitting if I shop carefully.

£200-300 for a box, £400 for clutch and fitting, should be fine. I have spent £600 on a 318is coupe (clutch DMF and MOT) so no stranger to these costs.

It isn't a daily driver or a car I need to use (my wife is just ordering her new company car which we use most of the time and I live 2 miles from work so cycle). I can take the time and end up with a car that is almost perfect body wise and has sorted mechanics.

I went in with my eyes open, picked up the issues on the test drive, used them to haggle a fair price IMHO. When finished it will be a nice original Classic Impreza compared to the chavved up **** heaps you usually see ;)

Fine to comment, but your math is wrong and it wasnt your choice to make it's not like I bought it full price and then thought crap, the gearbox and clutch is shot :)

Yes I have got it, it is in my garage, and performed a 130 mile round trip without a hiccup already today :)

Clutch isn't slipping, it just has a high bite point, gearbox is sweet as a nut, it just whines a bit in 1st/2nd, with time I could do it myself for just parts costs, but likely I will use a specialist.

Keep an eye on the whine, if it starts to get louder over time it could be the front diff, also the flywheel often needs replaced if the clutch is not replaced in time.

IF the gearbox ever needs to come out and the clutch is 50% or more worn you are best getting it replaced at the same time I was only charged £200 for the clutch last time my gearbox was out.

Exactly my plan, would be dumb not to replace the clutch when we do the box, bit like replacing a cambelt on a Golf and not the waterpump :)

If the friction material drops to the level of the flywheel it will score the flywheel which leaves it with less contact patch. It can be skimmed or replaced depending on how bad. Front diff will be replaced with the box I imagine.

I love the "last time my box was out" has it been out a lot?

:D

We have had 4 Subaru's in the family so I've seen a few common faults. Last time a box was out was the front diff thats why I mentioned it, the other was a broken 4th gear.

Last time a flywheel was damaged was on a classic (Catalunya) as the clutch was getting replaced at a garage which also breaks subaru's they only charged £70 for the flywheel.

Yeah think I am gonna get mine done at a Subaru Breakers as they will have the box to put in at the same time, and I should be able to get something back on my old box.

Replacement Gearbox £400 fitted another £75 for the clutch going in at the same time cha ching (thats the sound of my £749 off being replaced by a £475 bill) :)

Net saving of £275 should cover a cambelt if it needs doing once I have inspected it.

Had my renewal through from Adrian Flux today, £662 via Aviva...

Meerkats dot com, a lovely £380 through RAC with discounted RAC cover.

Very happy :)

Gearbox fitting on Monday with new Exedy clutch.

So Gearbox and Clutch fitted today, and how much more quiet it is :) No more judder in high gears at low RPM, no whine and 1-2 snicks in and out sweetly.

Guy said to me as I was paying him "Thats got some nice kit on it" I said "What do you mean?"

He says "Got whiteline control arms all round and matching ARB's and Drop links and a full polybush kit".

I says "So much for buying an unmodified car :D"

Explains why is was a bit spine jarring on the old bristol road :)

Guess I gotta call the insurance company now :-/

I see where you are coming from, but it looks a bit fugly to me!

Wouldn't bother mentioning polybushes, they are just an OE replacement item, just the ARBs.

And the control arms, they are the most obvious part :-/

And yeah, they were never pretty cars, but they are tiny on the road and go like stink :)

Old stuff goes like stink!

The rattling, road noise and tiny A pillars help remind you of your mortality!
